Rafa has beaten Chardy in straight sets in their two previous meetings, but they haven’t faced off in four years. This will be their first meeting on clay.

The defending champion hasn’t lost before the quarter-finals in Rome since 2008. He is the defending champion in Rome, a tournament he’s won eight times in all – 2005-07, ’09-10, ’12-13, ’18. He’ll try to become the first player this season to successfully defend a title.

The second seed is making his 15th consecutive appearance at the Foro Italico and he comes in with a 56-6 record (8-2 in finals) at the tournament. The Spaniard has advanced to the quarter-finals or better in 13 of his 14 previous visits to the Italian capital.

GOOD LUCK & VAMOS RAFA!

  1. Margo, Thanks for agreeing with me. Just a reminder:we should not take it for granted that FanLove is a woman.

    • RR, I am not going down that road. I leave it up to a fan to make any correction as to his or her gender.

      RAFAMAZING ROCKS

  2. Fan Love: It is disrespectful for you to continually keep referring to Rafa as “sweetheart”. You don’t know him personally. Please show a little more decorum.

    • RE, I do agree and think it’s disgusting. Having said, as I read your comment, I was hoping you had addressed her spamming. When I am out and about I check RNF on my mobile and when I come across her ramblings I know I will have to scroll a lot to reach other fans’ comments. Take heart, it could be worse.😬😂

  4. I’m really unimpressed with the organisers refusing to give refunds to people who had tickets for yesterday. It’s all very well saying that they can have tickets for another day instead, but most people will have had to take a day off work and won’t be able to take another, especially at short notice, and some people will have travelled long distances to get to Rome and might have stayed overnight. It’s not that easy just to come back another day. Very poor treatment of fans.

    • Setinthepast, and even more horrible treatment of fans is when the tournament raised the price for tickets to Roger’s match when he finally agreed to play Rome. Their reasoning was that they would reward “tennis fans” for buying tickets even though they didn’t know Roger would decide to play Rome.

Once Roger committed, the price for his match was doubled. [I don’t recall if it was for his first match or for all of his matches.]

  5. RAFA’S PRIVATE LIFE IS HIS, IT IS OUT OF LINE TO BE BRINGING THOUGHTS AND MENTION BS WITH RESPECT TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN HIS PRECIOUS TENNIS. SHOW RESPECT AND REGARD FOR HIS PRIVACY. IT IS DISAPPOINTING TO READ THE COMMENTS WHEN IN FACT IT IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.
GO RAFA GO AND GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) ENJOY A FABULOUS DAY TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

  7. All play has been cancelled for today. Such a shame. I don’t know how Rafa will feel because at some point, if it all goes to plan, he’ll have to play two matches in one day – very tiring.

Looking at the weather forecast, tomorrow and Thursday will be ok, but the heavy rain will return throughout the weekend 🙄☹. Fingers crossed that Rafa will shine through the clouds🌞

  8. Nobody’s going to be playing today, at this rate :-(. Glorious sunshine here in Northern England and pouring rain in Rome! I’m so sorry for the people who’ve got tickets, thinking they were going to be seeing Rafa, Roger, Nole and everyone else. Stupid weather!!

  9. Rafa will easily defeat in Chardy in 2 sets 6-4, 6-3

Those are his life pigeons including the likes of Richard Gasquet, Benoir Paire, Thomas Berdych etc, etc

    Hmmn…But as always, we’d see…..cheers

    Rafa rocks (apoloigies to Margo)

    • Maria, That’s what I inferred by “no surprises.”

      Apologies for what?

  10. The weather forecast for Rome today is abysmal – high of only 12 degrees and rain showers. I feel for the players (especially Rafa!) and the spectators. How can anyone enjoy tennis in that?
Hope we can do better at Wimbledon this year, both with the weather and the roof! I’ve managed to get tickets in the ballot for the first time and on CC so might finally have a chance to see Rafa play live after following him all these years.

    Good luck today Rafa!

  11. Hmmm…the ATP and another site have Rafa playing Chardy on clay in 2013 at Vina Del Mar in Chile in which Rafa won 6-2, 6-2 in the SF?

    RAFA ROCKS
