It will be Rafa’s 22nd Grand Slam final overall, breaking a tie with Novak Djokovic for second behind Roger Federer’s 28.

Rafa on facing Stan:

I have been playing a great event. But Stan is playing unbelievable, no? It will be a super-hard final and I will need to play at my very best.

Stan on facing Rafa:

I think to play Rafa on clay in French Open in a final is probably the biggest challenge you can have in tennis. He’s the best player ever on clay. He’s going for his 10th Roland Garros, so it’s something really impressive, something tough.

It’s for sure going to be really difficult. But again, in the end of the day, it’s the final. The pressure is on both players. No one will go on the court thinking he has no pressure. We both want to win the title, and we both gonna give it all on the court.

  • The winner of today’s final will move up to No. 2, with the runner-up at No. 3, when the ATP rankings are updated on Monday 12 June.
  • Rafa is in 1st place on the list for the most Tour-level match-wins in 2017 (42-6). Thiem (34-13), Goffin (31-12).
  • Rafa is in 1st place on the list for most clay court wins in 2017 (23-1).
  • This is Rafa’s 22nd Grand Slam final. He has a 14-7 win-loss record in Grand Slam finals, going into today’s match.
  • Rafa is bidding to win his 53rd career clay court title at Roland Garros.
  • Rafa is through to the Roland Garros final without dropping a set for the 5th time in his career. He also reached the final here without dropping a set in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. He went on to win the title without dropping a set in 2008 and 2010.
  • Rafa has played just 2 five-set matches at Roland Garros – he came back from 1-2 down to defeat John Isner in the 1st round in 2011 and also defeated Djokovic in 5 sets in the 2013 semifinals. He has a 19-9 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.
  • Rafa is the leading performer in Roland Garros history. He has a 78-2 win-loss record at Roland Garros, ahead of Federer (65-16), Djokovic (59-12) and Vilas (58-17).

Rafa has a 15-3 record against Wawrinka. Rafa has a 2-1 win-loss record against Wawrinka in Tour-level finals, with both of his 2 wins coming on clay. This is the 8th time the pair have met on clay. Rafa has a 6-1 win-loss record against Wawrinka on clay, with his only defeat coming at 2015 Rome-1000.

GOOD LUCK & VAMOS RAFA!

  1. What a spectacular men’s final we will witness tomorrow . Maybe this is a lucky time for Gemini’s, with Rafa and Jelena Ostapenko both having just celebrated their birthdays , ,(Jelena has just won the FO , her first grand slam after just turning 20 two days ago.) And Rafa will take his 10th tomorrow . Stan may never have lost a grand slam final , but Rafa has never lost a final at RG and tomorrow unlike Stan’s record ,that won’t have changed.
I loved retired tennis player Jo Durie’s reaction earlier when asked about whether Rafa could take the title tomorrow , she said ” It’s no good talking to me about Rafa , I just love him , just seeing him there I’m like all ooh, come on Rafa”( you and millions of others) and proceeded to go all gooey and giggly . Anabel croft said ” Jo your blushing”. I would love to how she reacts tomorrow when Rafa makes the impossible for everybody else possible.

  2. Best wishes to Rafa for tomorrow. I know we are all in for a riveting match. I’m sure both players will bring their A game. I was surprised Theim didn’t even score a set off of Rafa.
But he also defeated Novak prior for the very first time in his career which was huge for him.

I never compare womens’ tennis to mens’ tennis but one thing stood out to me between
Halep and Ostapenka was their desire and passion. It didn’t matter that the winner was never there before; she believed and she was relentless everytime she was down a break.
She came back and with a vengenance.

Whereas, Halep looked like she lost belief and her desire. She just seemed to be playing it safe. Rafa has so many strengths. Yes, Stan is a super-tough opponent but Rafa’s been in that position so many times before. He never under-estimates the power and abilities of his opponent so he is that much more prepared for them. You’re always expect a battle in the final of a Grand Slam, anyway. Looking forward to the battle. Vamos as always, Rafa!

    • I think Halep was outplayed, plain and simple and, like many of Rafa’s opponents who have succumbed to the Mallorcan, she appeared to have given up instead of fighting like the warrior Rafa is.

At this point, Ostapenka may just be a female version of Rafa, in playing style only. Time will tell whether or not she becomes a great champion like Rafa.

Rafa immediately came to mind as I watched her passing shots; her control of the ball, the accuracy of her cross-court shots.

Rafa won his first Coupe at just 19, she is just 20.

On their first-ever Roland-Garros appearance, they both won the title.

As Stan said, both he and Rafa want the Coupe and both will be going to the final feeling the extra weight of this singular tournament. According to reports, to help alleviate the pressure of winning a Decima, Carlos has been instructing Rafa to NOT think about
#10. Rafa purportedly said nine is his favorite number but that he would prefer ten over nine [at R-G].

      RAFA ROCKS

      • Hi Margo. Ostapenko actually played Roland Garros in 2015 and lost in the 1st round. It was her 1st year not playing junior tennis. She won Wimbledon juniors in 2014 and unlike so many others, has managed to convert that to a win in a grand slam final today. She is one to watch for the future. Rafa did indeed win his first RG aged 19 on his 1st appearance there.

  3. Rafa has the support of his mega millions of fans all over the world, so with us behind him he will have the confidence and drive to reel this 10th Roland Garros trophy into his arms.

Go for broke, be aggressive with your offense game while protecting through defense.

Vamos Rafa and the victory is yours !!!

  4. YOU DID DEFEAT THIEM QUITE IMPRESSIVELY RAFA AS YOU WILL DO WITH THAT PUBLIC PROVOKER WAWRINKA (IS IT ONLY ME BUT DO ALSO OTHERS GET ANNOYED BY PLAYERS WHO RAISE THEIR ARMS TO CALL FOR SPECTATOR SUPPORT?)

YOU ARE THE BEST RAFA SO GO FOR 19 GS’S NOT ONLY THE DECIMA. YOU ARE A YOUNG 31

    WAMOS WAMOS WAAMOOS

    • I’m with you puma, I’m not a fan of it , doesn’t his good friend Novak also do the same ?

      • Yes he does Maria you are right. I’ve never seen Rafa do that but andy did it against Stan the other day and at Wimbledon a few times unfortunately. Regardless – I’m wishing rafa a glorious final tomorrow and here’s hoping for a blistering and exciting match with the right man biting the trophy. I can’t wait.

      • Oh no, what a let down from Andy, I shall ask for his Knighthood to be taken away if he does it again Lol, we don’t want him picking up bad habits.
Hopefully the crowd will get behind Rafa tomorrow and make it extra special for him , It will certainly be an emotional time for him and his Uncle Toni thats for sure.I will be warning my neighbours to put in some earplugs as when he wins tomorrow they will hear my screams in the next county Lol.

    • Hi Lily,

I think Eurosport France will show the match. You can buy a 24 hour subscription if you don’t want to pay for a year. It is on TV and live streaming. Test it before the match to make sure your computer has all of the software needed. I have Eurosport UK to watch live streams of the slams, it works well.

      Good luck!

  5. hi everyone,
I hope nadal beats wawrinka in order to win la decima. Its very important for nadal to win his tenth title. He will have his throne back, he will win his fifteenth grandslam, it will be evidence that he is definitly back, his season will be a success he will narrow the gap with federer to three.

But it will be not easy. Wawrinka is unbeaten in grandslam finals and plays Always his best tennis in majors. The final will be also a mental thing. In my opinion the australian open final loss in 2014 was the beginning of a two year decline for nadal. He was devastated because he was the overwhelmingly favorite to win that final and to make history. A back injury threw it away that was the only time i saw nadal being emotional at a ceremony. Wawrinka broke him mentally He never recovered from that even when he won that year the French open he admitted to john mcenroe in a interview that he still had problems processing that loss. And after the French open the decline started.

Wawrinka made also djokovic cry in 2015. He played the match of his life so what i am trying to tell is nadal needs to play maybe his best match of the year in order to beat wawrinka. It will be not only a victory in the context of winning a grandslam but also emotionally and mentally in finally but this chapter behind him.

    • I fully agree. That was a dramatic loss, Aussie Open 14. None of the BS of the next 2,5 years would have happened, if not for that injury. I firmly believe Rafa would have been fighting for major no. 18 or 19 by now. Like this post if you believe can still get to 18 should he win tomorrow!

      • jason,

you right if he wins tomorrow the gap will be only three with federer then he can play with no pressure in london where has nothing to lose basically having the same position he had in 2008. Murray, Raonic and Federer are the favorites. Nadal has nothing to lose so hopefully he can pull out a upset and narrow the gap to two. I believe nadal himself wants to do well in London where hasnt preformed well since 2011 when he lost the final against djokovic

      • Can’t reply directly to Mjus’ post, but I think Rafa means business in the grass season. He’s entered at Queens. Statement of intent.

    • Completely agree. Rafa himself admitted that the worst thing about the match was he didn’t able to compete. So much was on the line- 15 slams, double career slam back to back hardcort majors n yet he remained empty handed. So of course that final really hurt Rafa and he was never the same again until….

    • I think he were that crushed about losing the AO, he would have lost the French.

For Rafa, 2014 was an injury-filled year; his back, his right wrist, and appendicitis. Instead of taking a break, he tried to keep playing. The human body can withstand only so much abuse. It needs time to heal.

Carlos made a point of stating he thinks Rafa’s two-month hiatus from tennis in October of 2016 may have been his longest. He made mention of Roger’s six-month leave and then his winning return. “Things for Rafa would have been so much easier” [if he had taken time off.

Rafa is human, after all, and has frailties like anyone else. I see him through the eyes of a devoted fan, and as a realist. May his passion for tennis continue, and lead him to many more wins.

      RAFA ROCKS

    • Hi mjus – I hear what you’re saying and I agree that Stan will not be an easy task. But Stan should be quaking in his trainers at the thought of facing Rafa – a man who has got to the final without dropping a set. Who has only lost 29 games throughout the tournament. Throughout the whole clay court season has only lost one match. And slayed Dominic thiem who had played really well until he met Rafa. And the best thing of all, despite all of this, Rafa will not be over confident and knows what to do. He is a different man from 2015. I for one would rather be in Rafa’s shoes than Stan’s. The main thing I will worry about is rafa being nervous due to what is at stake. I am sure it will be a great match.

  6. Hey Rafans !
I won’t be here to Watch the final on TV. Is there some good website where I can Watch it on streaming ?
    Please !!!!!!!!!!!

    • Lily, There are streams available but depend on where you are located. The streams available in Europe, for example, do not always work in the US. NBC has the rights to the two FO finals in the US. NBCSports.com will stream the finals. I have not had any luck with it, but Batman seems to work for many tennis fans.

  7. Here we are. Save your legacy Stan and withdraw in order to protect your perfect finals record. Otherwise, you better come correct and bring the big guns!

Watching a replay of Stan vs. Andy, I don’t really see how Stan is going to manage to get through Nadal. He can turn on Stanimal mode or whatever else he can pull out of his hat, it wouldn’t matter, because…

Rafa has a date with destiny. Ever since 2014 AO when Rafa’s Juggernaut ship got rudely veered off course, Rafa has not been the same player. Stan represents the iceberg that ‘sank’ Rafa’s ship (yea I know, it was injury- but we can’t beat up injury and teach it a lesson:) So everything comes full circle on Sunday.

Rafa will be the Global Warming to Stan’s Iceberg, and that will be that.

Get it done champ, VAMOS baby!!

    • Mac, I too am one of the Rafa fans who thinks Rafa has not been the same player since that AO loss. Maybe it was that his win there would give him two wins at every Slam. Rafa has had many injuries, but maybe it was getting one just before a final that stunned him. We may never know, but it started a depression and loss of confidence that lasted a long time. A win on Sunday would mean so much to him and his fans.

    • No worries, justice will be served tomorrow and the trophy that has been loaned out for a couple of years will be back in its safe and very familiar hands.

  8. Of course, 😊I am praying for him, Wawrinka played well too, I saw him last week in his second match against Dolgopolov. Yesterday was a good match, easier for Rafa than I thought it would be, Thiem was not playing as well as he did against Novak. Lucky people who have a ticket for the final. Fiona in Paris

    • I also saw Andy Murray win at Roland Garros on Tuesday 30th May against Kuznetsov, Verdasco against Zverev which pleased me as I support the Spanish Armada .😃 Zverev crashed his racket, so did David Ferrer, it seems to be the fashion this year. Years ago in England we used to say we didn t like bad losers, fair play is an English expression used in other languages. Zverev going out first round and Carreno s abandon meant 2 less players for Rafa to confront. I saw Thiem in the street last week, spoke to him in German and said congrats for this week, you must continue and he said I will do. He did against Novak. That was a surprise for us here. One less opponent for Rafa. I agree with you others and Jason, he should have already have some more Grand Slam titles clocked up , Wimbledon 2011 and 2012 RG 2009 and 2015 and Aus Open 2017. Of course we understand it is disappointing for them too. Anything can happen. Rafa gave me an autograph last week, I spoke to his team in Spanish and said we understand it is not easy for you, always requested for photos etc. and we appreciate the time you take with us 😀Fiona in Paris

  9. yes so finally we r here rafa all the very best ………whaen stan play well his serve come very good he has lot of power on his serve…..his first serve are very strong and heavy for opponents he has ultomate power on his shots because of strong upper body posture he had…………u dont want to play repeat length shot of same pace to him…he loves it to its advantage when he plays well….what he hate is different pace ball …change in direction and deep shots…..so i just hope rafa will mix it up…and will take advantage on his 2 nd serve…..rafa has to return well since short ball will cause stan to play aggressive…..

rafa knows the best what he has to do……be calm vamos rafa…….best luck rafa

    • And that’s just what Moyà said Rafa and the team are working on; Rafa’s second serve and mixing it up. The final can’t come soon enough.

      RAFA ROCKS

  10. Rafa, just make sure your “all” tops Stan’s “all.” Be your very best “Moyafied.

The very best to you on your Decima quest.

    RAFA ROCKS

  11. WOW WEEEEE This should be one heck of a match. This is what I have been waiting for. Thought it might be DelPotro but he’s long gone.

Didn’t remember Rafa’s record vs Stan until RNF post just now….My dinero is on Rafa, anywayssss LOL

Leave the shorts home Stan! That’s an order.

    RAFA ROCK ROLAND-GARROS

    • Can’t wait – The trophy 🏆 is yours to bite Champ ❤️🍀🤗

VAMOOS & GOOD LUCK RAFA! 🎾💪🏼😘🤞🏻
