  1. My sole concern is for Rafa and I’m glad he decided to skip the USOPEN. Less worry for him and his family, team, and me.

So I guess it isn’t only Djokovic who thinks he’s special. [My comment of Aug. 5] If true, he’s now got backup by enlisting other players to make the same demand.

As far as other players are concerned, WTA and ATP, it’s their choice to play or not. Yes, they are “dying” for a slam but I don’t agree they should play. Their lack of respect for this virus’s capabilities says it all. What I find as appalling is the quid pro quo.

    RAFA ROCKS SMART

  2. A report by Quentin Moynet, a journo with L’Equipe, says there’s an emergency telephone meeting on with the American Federation, the ATP and the players, The top 20 led by Djoker are threatening to boycott the U.S. if they aren’t guaranteed freedom from quarantine upon their return to Europe.

I’m finding it distasteful that they are demanding this special treatment but sadly won’t be surprised if governments cave in.

    • The usual coronavirus quarantine is 14 days. Thus if there is as quarantine in Europe players who make it to the second week of the US Open would basically be knocked out of playing at Roland- Garris.
Players are saying they want the chance to play both but by talking boycott they are indicating a preference for the French Open.

I’m glad Rafa does not have to take part in the back and forth. It doesn’t reflect well on anyone.

  3. If Novak Djokowitch has any shame, especially regarding the public outcry following the near-deadly outcome of his ill-fated Adrian Tour, he would bravely join forces with ‘class act’ Nadal and pull out of the USO.

If Novak Djokowitch respects and values his No 1 ranking as heroic, he would tow the path of honor and leadership like Nadal and withdraw from the USO.

NADAL has shown that his health and the health of the world is more important than his ambition. Can Nadal do the same or is his G.O.A.T ambition more important than his own life?

I know NK has an extreme nuisance value, but by joining forces with Ash Barry to withdraw from the USO, he has displayed an unexpectedly high level of altruism, compassion and humanity. For this singular act from a demented soul like NK, he is now in my good book and all his sins are forgiven.

Because it is in difficult times like these that we know who our true heroes are.

Over a million deaths worldwide from the pandemic, so the least we can do is to sympathy and use every opportunity to support all efforts to shame and destroy the virus. This is not the time for anybody to be Superman or to show invisibility.

Novak Djokovic tried to be Superman in the Adria Tour and nearly paid for it with his life.

Will he be 2nd time foolish? Will he choose to be on the side of the people like RN & NK or will be on the side of the virus? Will he show responsibility for once to earn the type of world-wide respect and love shown universally to Rafa and Roger?

But we already know that Novak Djokovic (and the people around him especially his father) have no shame. They would rather Djokovic be Superman than a Hero.

But as always, we go hour by hour, match by match and day by day…………cheers

  4. VAMOS SWEETHEART!!!!!:) LOOKS LIKE BEST THING IS TO NOT ANNOUNCE A FINAL YES OR NO WITH US OPEN PARTICIPATIONS / ATTENDANCE…..WAIT AND SEE HOW THE SITUATION DEVELOPS THEN DECIDE WHAT IS THE RIGHT STEP FOR YOU…….I AM THINKING ABOUT THE BS REPORTS BY OTHER PLAYERS….. FOR SURE DO NOT TRUST WHAT PRINCESS r. OR n. REPORT REGARDING THEIR SCHEDULE FOR US OPEN AND THE FOLLOWING FEW TOURNAMENTS, OR THEIR CURRENT HEALTH REPORTING………PAY ZERO ATTENTION SINCE THEY ARE AFTER GETTING GS TITLE THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE TRUE COMPETITION WITH YOUR ABSENCE FROM US OPEN………….WITHOUT YOU THERE, THEY WILL SUDDENLYCHANGE THEIR MIND AND PLAY….SO HOLD YOUR CARDS PRIVATELY GURDED ….AND JUST DO WHAT YOU THINK IS BEST….. WE LOVE YOU !!!!:):):):) GO RAFA GO!!!!!!!!!!:) VAMOS SWEETHEART AND ENJOY EVERYTHING!!!!!:) XOXOXO

  5. Djokovic has also pulled out of the USOPEN. I wonder if he has any residual effects from COVID-19. He was asymptomatic but that doesn’t guarantee he didn’t escape lung damage.

    • VERY STRANGE

On TV news it was just reported that Roger would play this year’s USOPEN and we know he’s not returning to play until 2021. So the announcement that Djokovic has pulled out may be incorrect. I cannot find any online reports confirming Djokovic won’t play.

      • Christopher Clarey has retweeted a journalist who claims that ND hasn’t decided yet whether or not to play. Will announce in a few days.

      • The Guardian newspaper says Djokovic will decide in the next few days.

If he decides to compete in New York I personally believe Thiem could beat him.

Also I wonder if Rafa will compete at Rome, assuming that tournament is not canceled? Or could he compete in a different clay tournament if one moves into the Madrid week. I’ve read that the Austrian tournament might make such a move.

      • Thank you Pauline and David for the clarification.

There are also reports that Djokovic will play the USOPEN only on the condition that he won’t have to quarantine once he returns to Europe. Isn’t he special.

      • Anyone coming to the UK from Spain is meant to quarantine for 2 weeks. But Real Madrid have been given an exemption for their Champions League match against City. So, yep, big sporting names are special! To be fair, all players are being tested regularly, but giving exemptions is a bit of a slippery slope to start down. I think this was the issue with Palermo: they asked if Simona Halep could be exempted, but then it would have meant her coach and anyone else travelling with her being exempted as well … where do you draw the line?

  7. Yes, it’s just coming up here that Rafa won’t be playing. I’m wondering if it’ll go ahead at all – the USTA seem very determined, though.

      • Plenty of sporting events are going ahead behind closed doors, so that could be an option, but the decision to sell tickets for Madrid and Roland Garros seemed very odd.

  8. To be precise Rafa took to twitter to say “After many thoughts I have decided not to play this year’s US Open. The situation is very complicated worldwide, the covid -19 cases are increasing. It looks like we still don’t have control of it”.

I’m disappointed I won’t be able to see Rafa in action in the US, but I’m happy that he put his health first.

  9. I just heard on the radio that Rafa has pulled out of the US Open. He said that “….the situation is still complicated around the world”. Rafa and his team will have weighed things up carefully and come to the decision which is in the best interest of Rafa and those around him.

  10. Open Court has seen the entry list for the U.S. Open and Rafa is not on it. He will therefore not be defending his title. If accurate not a surprise as even up to yesterday he has been practicing exclusively on clay.

  11. It’s official….. The Mutua Madrid Open is cancelled….

A statement has been released…. The ATP and WTA regret to confirm the cancellation of the 2020 Mutua Madrid Open, a decision that has been taken in line with local authorities due to health and safety concerns. We would like to recognize the efforts of the tournament organizers who have gone to great lengths in exploring all options to run this year’s tournament, despite the many challenges presented by COVID-19. Both tours are assessing updates to the 2020 provisional calendars in regards to events following the US Open, and an update will be published in due course.

More disappointment…. but safety is the ultimate concern for one and all….

Stay safe everyone….this is far from over….

  12. So this weekend I am following a golf tournament. It’s a proper golf tournament, not a celebrity event and apparently some of the players in it are quite good.

Rafa has just scored an eagle, the only one so far in the tournament, and he is now in the lead, with 8 holes left to play. Even if he doesn’t win, that’s quite something. Maybe that’s what four months of saved up competitive spirit does! Vamos Rafa!!

  13. On July 26 I posted that Spain was having increases in the number of infections and outbreaks in many areas of the country; it reopened its economy earlier than anticipated because it was thought they had the virus under control.

The same scenario is occurring in the US and other countries.

Unless leaders and populaces use the tools they have to mitigate the spread of SARS-CoV19 things will continue as they have for the last 5-6 months.

I am waiting to see Rafa play, when it’s safe.

      • A Spanish newspaper and Tennis365 report that the Madrid Open has been canceled with an official announcement to follow. Don’t know if this report is correct since previously tournament people said they would wait and see.

    • According to Agence France Presse their country could change course at any moment. Their Covid19
scientific council is concerned about the largest rise in intensive care patients since April.

Best not to assume that the French Open will proceed in only six weeks from now. As much as people want to forget about this virus, this virus is not forgetting about people.

I imagine that Rafa is following or being informed of the world situation and will be making the best decisions at the appropriate time.

  14. Amazing montage for sure Rafa estay safe we miss you on the court 🎾😘🎾

  15. Amazing montage for sure Rafa stay safe we love you all your fans 🎾😘👍🎾😘

  16. News re: the Madrid Open. According to a report uncovered by Christopher Clarey the Spanish Ministry of Health has asked that the event be cancelled due to the worsening Covid situation. The organizers are in discussion trying to salvage it but will announce the final decision soon.

    • I saw the report by Chris Clarey. He seems to say the odds are against the Madrid Open. I also see that news cases are much higher in Spain than in France and Italy. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a spike in those countries too.

      Easy does it Rafa!

    • I had a Eurosport newsflash about that. I wonder if they’ll let it go ahead behind closed doors: plans to let fans back into stadia here in the UK have been postponed for now, and I was surprised that both Madrid and Roland Garros were planning to let crowds in. I also see than an unnamed player tested positive before the Palermo Open 🙁 . La Liga’s gone ahead OK, so I’d think the authorities would be OK if it was players and officials only, and everyone was tested.

    • It’s confirmed by multiple media sources that Madrid is canceled.

Also I saw a Chris Clarey tweet that Rafa has decided to stay on US Open Entry List and that if he withdraws it will happen closer to the start date ( which is August 31).

Not sure where this leaves the Western and Southern Open- probably that Rafa’s playing, at least for now.

      • Yes, and it was also reported that Djokovic has already alerted players to the cancellation.

The main reason for the cancellation was due to the uncertainty of player safety and health during the week. Madrid’s Deputy Public Health Council announced in a letter to the tournament director, Feliciano Lopez, that “he discouraged the event due to the impossibility of guaranteeing health security.”

What I don’t understand is why sports officials continue to give players, eager to play, false hopes. Does anyone understand what a pandemic is.

Both Zverev and Kyrgios won’t play the USOPEN.

    • I’ve been hoping that Rafa will be able to play the FO, his favorite playground but I just read a NYTimes article stating France’s increasingly high infection rate. Yesterday it recorded 1,695. Starting this month, it’s daily count averages 1,242 which is almost the same level of infections it had in May when the country was still under lockdown.

Please don’t be a washout Paris.
