Rafael Nadal: I hope to be back in Shanghai for the 2020 tournament

Rafael Nadal has been forced to withdraw from the Shanghai Masters due to a wrist injury.

Hi all, I am very sad to announce that I won’t be able to play in Shanghai this year. It is the second year in a row and in China I have great fans. The tournament is amazing and the city one of the most special places around the world.

But, as you all probably know, I had an inflammation on my left wrist during the Laver Cup and I haven’t had the time to recover and practice to be ready for this amazing event. I hope to be back in Shanghai for the 2020 tournament.

Rafa is a two-time finalist in Shanghai – 2009 and 2017 – and was looking to extend an 11-match winning streak. He pulled out of his final match at the Laver Cup with a left wrist injury two weeks ago.

He has also won 28 of his last 29 matches, a run that includes his fourth U.S. Open title and 12th Roland Garros championship in addition to Masters 1000 crowns in Montreal and Rome.

  1. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD

Voting is now open for ATPTour.com Fans’ Favorite singles player and doubles team in the 2019 ATP Awards. You can vote as many times as you want. I ALWAYS vote multiple times for Rafa.

  2. I hope he is CONSERVATIVE in his decisions re: whether to play in the remaining tournaments of the year! He doesn’t NEED them!!!

    • According to Davis Cup Tournament Director Albert Costa, Rafa “didn’t go to the Asian swing just because he wants to head into the late stage of the season in the best possible way. He will definitely play in Paris, London and Davis Cup”.

  5. Rafa get better we miss you on the court vamossssssssss champ we miss you 🎾🎾🎾😘😘😘👍👍👍❤️

  6. Rafa I wish for you all the best. Don’t worry about it .it shall be well unlike Nole who is possessed and feels he owns the Tennis World. If him don’t win every tournament he will hire every coach money can afford. You can’t forced people to like you Nolche. Try a little humility

  7. Get better soon Rafa
I know being number one has never been your top priority, unlike Novak! Have a wonderful wedding and all the very best to you and your beautiful girl, Xisca

  8. I am a little confused since I had the impression that Rafa was not planning to play Shanghai any way. Maybe his injury (hopefully minor) was a convenient excuse? Rafa had said earlier that he was playing Paris and WTF. I will confess that I would have liked Rafa to play since he could gain points. Rafa said, however, that he will not chase the number one ranking again and is more focused on extending his career. This year has already exceeded my expectations with Rafa’s thrilling USO win. I would rather that Rafa play for a couple more years.

    • va4favre, please don’t be confused. As far as I can tell, Rafa didn’t indicate he would play Shanghai. If I recall correctly, Roig said he may play Paris and the ATP Finals.

If Rafa marries on October 19, as reported by the media, that will give him nine days for a honeymoon until the Paris Masters start on October 28. Maybe he will delay his honeymoon. It’s anyone’s guess at this time.

As you are aware, the ATP Finals, 11/9-11/17, and Davis Cup, 11/18-11/24, are back-to-back. I am simply hoping he doesn’t return to the Tour until he is completely healed.

      • The exhibition match vs. Djokovic is still showing on the Kazakhstan tennis federation instagram for Oct. 24.

If Rafa plays all the tournaments you cited he will not have much free time for the rest of the year. He has signed up again for Abu Dhabi which will be earlier than usual from Dec.19-21.

      • RR, I agree and that’s why I feel Rafa will further winnow down his proposed schedule. Of course, everything is contingent on how tournament ready his body is.

I didn’t include Kazakhstan because I erroneously remembered it being scheduled for 2020.

Personally, I see Rafa definitely playing Davis Cup and the ATP Finals if he is fit.

Rafa can play a big tournament and win without having played a lead-up tournament so I wouldn’t be surprised if he played Paris. He has been practicing according to some tweets.

I am not looking at anything after Davis Cup except the AO.

I remember when Rafa used to make up a schedule and adhere to it. Now, I think he commits to events and depending on the circumstances he drops some and plays others. Just my opinion.

If Rafa really wants to keep competing, I sincerely hope he comes to his senses and let the condition of his body dictate what events he will play no matter what he has committed to.

        RAFA ROCKS

    • Va4favre – I completely agree …. For me…I never thought Rafa was playing the Asian swing this year once the wedding date in October was announced. Knowing how close Rafa is with his family it just didn’t make sense to me that 2 weeks before the biggest event of his life he was going to begin a tournament half way around the world. The wrist/hand needs more rest and seems to be a good excuse and here we have it. I remember when he was on the schedule to play Cincinnati after his victory in Toronto, I thought there was no way he was playing that tournament which was on the heels of the OPEN and he waited till a day or two before the tournament began and withdrew then… I even thought if Rafa and Mery were going to grab some time for a short honeymoon after the wedding that maybe he would pass on Paris… He will need to practice before Paris or maybe he would go straight to London…
I recall Rafa saying at a press conference awhile ago that his tournament schedule is submitted some 18 -24 months in advance… (please correct me if I am wrong) . That being said, lot’s of things change from the time he submits his intent to the time the actual tournament is played… This is a big year for him in every way… I agree he needs to preserve his body for the longevity of his career… Don’t be surprised if we see some additional withdrawals as time goes by… The days of doing the back to back to back tournaments for our boy is highly unlikely no matter what the schedule shows… Stay tuned….

      • He did not say about Tournaments in advance. He indeed said that His outfits are selected 18-24 months in advance… But as always your review is great. I read Your, Margo and Mimi’s comments when you all post them
        Vamos for our champs
As things stand, Rafa needs one big tournament to be number 1.He is ahead of Djoker in every aspect. He should try it to finish number 1 after his wedding and Honeymoon

      • There are a few articles, in Spanish and English, saying Rafa will play Paris, the ATP Finals and Davis Cup. However, neither Rafa nor a team member is quoted so I’m still waiting for Rafa or his team to confirm his schedule.

Puntodebreak.com went as far as saying Rafa will use Paris as preparation for the Finals with the hope of winning it for the first time in his career.

In September, Roig said Rafa will play Paris if he wants to end the year as No. 1.

Rafa can do anything, if he is healthy. Wishing him the best.

        RAFAMAZING ROCKS
