Rafael Nadal has perfect draw for US Open?

The draw was performed yesterday in New York City. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has been drawn to face Australian John Millman in the first round of the US Open. He could meet another dangerous Aussie in Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round and fellow Spanish lefty Fernando Verdasco in the third round. John Isner and former champion Marin Cilic are potential opponents for our champ in the fourth round.

If Rafa and Roger Federer finally are going to face each other at the U.S. Open for the first time in their long rivalry, it only could happen in the final.

If it falls per ranking, this would be Rafa’s path to the final:

  • 1st round: John Millman
  • 2nd round: Thanasi Kokkinakis
  • 3rd round: Fernando Verdasco
  • 4th round: John Isner
  • Quarter-final: Alexander Zverev
  • Semi-final: Dominic Thiem
  • Final: Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer

If the men play to seed the quarter-final line up will be:

  • Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev
  • Roger Federer vs Kei Nishikori
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Dominic Thiem
  • Alexander Zverev vs Rafael Nadal

Our champ is bidding to clinch a 18th grand slam title of his career and his fourth in the Big Apple.

Rafa, who has a 59-11 record in New York City, including the 2010, 2013 and 2017 crowns, has never lost in the first round of the US Open and last failed to get past the second round 14 years ago, when he lost to Andy Roddick in 2004.

The tournament starts on Monday.

GOOD LUCK & VAMOS RAFA!

  1. Go champ vamosssssssssss and good luck 🇺🇸🎾💪😘❤️🇺🇸🎾💪😘❤️😋🇺🇸🎾💪😘❤️

  2. Wishing Rafa a very successful U.S. open. Please do your best Rafa and most importantly keep injury free. Make this a great wedding present for Zisca and an early Christmas present for your fans. God be with you. Love you heaps.

  3. Not exactly perfect draw but a doable draw. Rafa has been getting Fed in his half of the draw for three of the four slams – AO, FO and Wimbledon – it’s time Djoko gets Fed.

Anyway, Fed may not get that far to meet Djoko in the SF should Djoko himself get there. I think Goffin is playing well, so he’s potentially Fed’s R4 opponent. If Goffin plays his best and shows some belief, he may cause an upset, but that may go the distance. And, Kei may be next in waiting in the QF, and Kei, should he be good enough to get that far, may take advantage after the Fed/Goffin match.

Djoko has first Stan/Hurkacz to deal with in R4, before a potential meeting with Medvedev in the QF, not easy either.

I think it’s the survival of the fittest as well, when it’ll be hot and humid at NY. Last year, Djoko was the last man standing, when Fed succumbed to the heat and humidity and lost to Millman, so Djoko had it easy against Millman in the QF. Djoko had a relatively easy draw last year having Kei in the SF and then a depleted Delpo in the final. (I was disappointed with Delpo’s performance in the final, after given a retirement from Rafa in the SF. Delpo wasn’t the fittest guy and perhaps his match against Isner earlier on had taken a toll on him physically).

Rafa has to play short point tennis to avoid all the grindings he had last year, that way he will arrive at the later stages being physically fit; he’ll need to be at his best to reach the final and beating whoever there in the final, be it Djoko or Medvedev or even Fed.

    • Nadal has a very tough draw. Five potential opponents there who recently took him to the brink at majors, he lost to two of them. The Thiem Khachanov sequence destroyed him so he has actually a very tough draw. Djokovic has an even tougher route but Weak Era king Roger got 5 easy first rounds, as usual.

      • Thiem is not the Thiem of 2018 USO; he’s suffering a virus infection and is not fully recovered yet.

You got to look at current form, not the form of one year ago. Rafa is in better form this year than most – Khachanov, Thiem, Sasha, Tsitsipas, Monfils, Agut, Cilic, Isner, Verdasco – from his half of the draw.

So, it’s a doable draw, a draw that’s better than his last year’s where he had Khachanov in R3, Basilashvili in R4, Thiem in QF and Delpo in SF, a killer draw worse than his Wimbledon draw this year imo, except that he had Fed in SF at Wimbledon.

      • Jean, if Rafa plays the way we know he can play, he is safe. He will win. He has to leave his nerves and lapses of concentration in the locker room. Playing smart will get him the title. He is going into the US Open after winning the Coupe Rogers and a decent rest period.

  6. For a champion like Rafa, you don’t win a major if you are avoiding to play some players. In tennis there is just one winner and that winner must have capacity to beat every competitor and not count in other players to knock out some players on your behalf.

I think Rafa is just that man with capacity to beat any tennis player in the world. For now we look forward to a Rafa first round win and we take each match as it comes, each etc, each game and each point.

  7. I am pleased with the draw and hope Rafa is too. Happy to see such a doable 19th.

At the moment the only thorns I see are Djokovic and Roger but like Rafa I will take it match-by-match.

Best of luck to Rafa to sail through week two and win another Slam.

    RAFAMAZING ROCKS

  8. 19th is coming… Believe me
One Match at a time Rafa as always
Wishing you many more victories and Healthy end to another fantastic Season
    Vamos Rafa
It would be awesome for Rafa to clinch Us open trophy before his wedding

      • va4favre, not that it’s an excuse but “18th” is most likely a typo. I noted that RNF wrote “a 18th” [both grammatically and factually incorrect] instead of “an 18th”.

        A 19th it will be.

        RAFAMAZING SHINES

    • 19th 🏆👌🤗
Yes, it would be a wonderful wedding gift for Rafa and Mery😍
      Vamos RAFA!!!

  9. Rafa has a very good chance of taking this title based on the fact that both Federer and Dvokovich come in after having been beat at Cincinnati while Rafa wom at Montreal having played very well , especially against Medvedev .Vamos ! Please Just Dp It !

  10. We have all seen good draws turn out otherwise, but I think Rafa has a fair one. Just having Roger on the other half removes the media pressure. I am most excited that Rafa seems healthy and rested so far. That is all we can ask.

  11. Rafa so delightef you got your true ranking at US Open . Thankfully your draw is somewhat more favourable this time. Nice to see Nole & Roggie on same side. BUENA SUERTE Rafa

  12. Rafa you will achieve your 19th GS …for once your draw is much fairer and that you gt ave your true ranking here atcUS Open. Delighted to see no’s 1 + 3 got the other end of the stick for a change. BUENA SUERTE Rafa.
