Rafael Nadal is forced to withdraw from the Mexican Open due to a hip injury.

  1. Wawrinka is listening to his body and has pulled out of IW and Miami. He will revert to practice only until the clay season. I hope that Rafa follows suit because If he wants to extend his career, Rafa must realise that, in terms of a comeback at his age, slow and steady wins the race.

  2. We all know that Rafa is extremely passionate about his tennis. Alejandro Burillo, owner and president of Grupo Pegasi, the organisers of the Mexican Open, said Rafa was extremely disappointed by his latest injury problem and told him that he cried in his villa for two hours. I can only imagine what he’s going through. Rafa is known for his mental strength, but as I said in my previous post, these recurring problems can take their toll psychologically. All the more reason for Rafa to chill out for a couple of months to give himself the proper time to recover and to lessen any anxiety. After all, there is no one on his heels, at the moment, as far as the rankings are concerned.

  3. I am wondering if Rafa may already have made up his mind about what to do after recovering.

Consider this: After being forced recently to either retire or withdraw from so many tournaments because of injuries, it has to have dawned on Rafa that he needs to schedule tournaments with a view to staying healthy.

Consider this: Not long after Rafa retired from the AO, he said he wanted to return as the best court player. I posted that here in an earlier post.

Consider this: Spain will host Germany in the Davis Cup World Group quarterfinals in just its second appearance in the last eight since 2012. April 6-8, on clay. [DC website]
I feel Rafa will want to be a part of this, for country and team.

Consider this: Won’t Rafa want to play the Monte-Carlos Masters April 15-22, if he is fit?

And on with the rest of the clay season looking for an 11th French Open title.

Rafa owns clay so I can’t envision him being insecure on this surface.

Wishing for a good prognosis and sufficient recovery period so Rafa can continue wowing his fans and the tennis world.

    RAFA ROCKS

  4. Rafa is opening yet a second tennis center, scheduled to open this coming November.

The Rafa Nadal Sports Center will be located in the resort town of Cancun and will boast eight clay courts, a gymnasium, and a section that will house objects donated by athletes of all time. [forbes.com.mx]

Congratulations to Rafa on another adventure.

  5. According to the Spanish-language press, Rafa said not until the liquid subsides can there be a diagnosis. [He may be referring to the liquid-filled bursa that is near the iliopsoas.]

The reporter said he hoped Rafa’s absence will not spoil the excitement for the championships which includes five of the world’s top-ten players. Rafa responded, “this year Alcapulco has one of the best quarters in its history and I will stay a little longer.

Enjoy your stay, luxuriate in the beauty of Alcapulco and Cozumel, rest, relax, try to stay off your feet, rest some more, learn how to recuperate.

    Please rest Rafa, POR FAVOR

If you rest Rafa, you will rock even more.

  6. Unfortunate as we know you enjoy Acapulco tournament. However, recover soon
as tennis is uninspiring when you are absent. Of course, we wish you the best, and are confident your team is top notch. IW will miss you, if you cannot attend☹️

  7. Rafa should rest complety and if he is given green light then play. Maybe IW is coming too soon. Miami should be a better option.

But foremost Rafa should be guided psychologically because i fear the fact that he has withdrawn five times from a tournament could have a devestating impact on him and can affect his game in a way it did in 2015 and 2016. These two years were aweful and very bad for nadal personally but also the atp. And then people will write him off just like they did in those two years.

  8. Having to withdraw from several tournaments in succession can be damaging psychologically. Rafa, be patience and wait for the clay!!!

  9. Fortunately for Rafa, his injury is nothing akin to Andy’s.

According to his comments to the press, Andy’s condition seems to be a degenerative hip-joint problem; something he admitted to have been suffering from for many years. I hope his surgery went well.

Rafa, on the other hand, suffered an injury to his iliopsoas muscle which is actually two muscles that converge. Not only is it in a hard-to-reach area but it is surrounded by nerve cells which most likely explains the severe pain Rafa experienced. I am aware of Rafa’s high tolerance for pain but pain caused by nerve cells is a totally different beast.

His only chance of recovery is to rest; no golf, no appearances for sponsors, nada.

IW starts next week and I hope he skips it.

Waiting anxiously to learn what the diagnosis is and what he decides to do.

    RAFA ROCKS

  10. In my opinion Rafa always wants to come back from injury too soon. He should never have considered playing Acapulco in the first place.
Much I love to see him play he would be wise to forget all about Indian Wells and maybe Miami also. Forget about the number 1 and be ready for a good clay season.
But of course when he goes home to rest he doesn’t do so. He plays golf instead. Then he is travelling all over the place at the demand of the sponsors who take advantage of his absence from tennis to promote their products.
I will be a Rafa fan forever but I just wish he would take a good look at his schedule and committments and make some serious adjustments.
I know he is just so popular and everyone wants a piece of him but he needs to learn to say “no”at times.
If he really wants to prolong his career now is the time to make some changes.

  11. Now you know the true face of a Federer fan on this site named Margo. The one who tries to fight against every single opinion on this site when they suggest Rafa needs more rest to fully recover. Nice try! But simply putting “Rafa Rocks” at the end of comments doesn’t make you a Rafan.

Now i really doubt whether he could prevent Djokovic to become the first man in the Open Era to complete “Double Career Grandslam”. Rafa’s injury seems to be similiar with Andy Murray’s case. Being impatience and not having a right treatment could cost his career.

  12. I’m praying you’ll get better soon . We love you here in Indian Wells, Tennis is not the same without you . Vamos Rafa !!!

  13. Already he’s talking about “coming back as quickly as possible” without knowing exactly what is going on.

The iliopsoas is the strongest of the hip flexors and is important for walking, standing and running. If Rafa doesn’t eat properly and truly rest, something he seems incapable of doing, he will not heal.

    TAKE TIME TO FULLY HEAL
