Rafael Nadal is ranked second in the latest ATP rankings, but he will likely to be the fourth seed at the Wimbledon due to seeding formula. With his win in Halle, Roger Federer has moved ahead of Rafa into third place in the seedings.
The significance of the seeding shift means that Rafa will avoid any potential meeting with Federer until the final, while he will only have to face one of Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

- Wawrinka
- Raonic
- Cilic
- Thiem
Unlike the other three Slams, Wimbledon is not bound to follow the ATP rankings when it comes to seeding its own tournament by virtue of its status as a private club.
Since 2001, the All England Club has applied a seeding formula that takes into account a player’s historical success on grass.
The formula is:
– Take the Emirates ATP Ranking points at 26 June 2017
– Add 100% of the points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months
– Add 75% of the points earned for the best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that
We need the sun to shine and harden the grass. The drier the grass the better Rafa will play. C’mon sunshine – dry those courts for Rafa.

I like how Wimbledon Seeds the players. It is a great way to best account for skill on surfaces. The French should do that too. It was a pity to see Rafa and Novak face off in the 2013 Semis just because Rafa missed the second half of 2012 and was seeded 5th. We want the best to face the best in the finals, not earlier because of technicalities. But I’m glad they played on the hot day because Novak sucks in the heat and the match was so close if they hadn’t played on the hot day Novak might have won lol!!!

Umh! The Wimbledon special formula! 😜 It is what it is. As long as Rafa is seeded in the top 4 (which he is) I’m happy. The most important thing is for him is to get through the first week, as there’ll be a lot of lower ranked players after his blood. They have succeeded to take him down in the early rounds in the last few years but we are seeing a more confident, improved Rafa now. The key is for him to stay aggressive.
In an interview with Tennis World, referring to his practice sessions Rafa said, “My current level is not enough to compete the way I want in Wimbledon”. Even if this is the case, he will get more competitive practice from the exhibition matches he is scheduled to play this week. Once Rafa gets the adrenaline pumping and he maintains his fitness, he’ll be difficult to stop.

I quite agree with you, Jill Ellridge. Roger is the darling of the Wimbledon officials. Of course they want a Roger /Rafa final. It sells tickets. But I greatly suspect they expect, and want, Roger to win it. They see Rafa more as a sacrificial lamb to enhance Roger’s greatness.
Perhaps I am being cynical but it’s how I see it.
I admire Roger’s prowess on grass just as I admire Rafa’s on clay and the grass courts are not kind to Rafa’s knees but how I would love him to bite that Wimbledon trophy for the third time.

You should respect what Roger has accomplished on Grass. He deserves to be ahead of Rafa in seeding. I’m a die hard Rafa fan, but Roger is better on grass than Rafa is. That is what makes Rafas 2008 Wimbledon Victory sooooo Special. He beat THE KING OF GRASS. There is no denying it. Roger beat Rafa 2/3 and has 7 titles there in 10 finals. That’s way better than Rafas 1/3 and 2 titles in 5 finals. Besides, what’s not to like about a Rafa Roger Final?!? This is the best rivalry in the history of the sport. We were so lucky to see them compete at the Aussie earlier this year… I never thought we’d see another one. If it could happen here one more time, that would be such a treat!
Rafa is after him and will take your hero down. Roger will not last 5 sets with Rafa as fit and healthy as he is now. As for respect, when we rafa fans from you fedtards we will return it. I don’t mind the seeding, the only objection is Novak at 2. I don’t like the swiss but in my opinion he should be seeded 1 or 2
I think we Rafa fans need to be very realistic about Rafa’s play at Wimbledon. He has not played a tournament on grass since 2015. I think he was too tired to play Queens, so that was the right decision. While I always want Rafa to win everything, I have modest expectations there. I do not have a favorite, but if Rafa wins two rounds and Andy should lose the title, Rafa becomes number one. I like Andy a lot, but if he is to lose, it would be incredible to have Rafa back at one.
I agree about the realistic part. I want Rafa to win Wimbledon, but should he lose I am not going to be driven to apoplexy.
I honestly feel he has a good chance of doing well or better at Wimbledon, despite the fact that he has not played on grass in two years. I am basing my opinion on his 2017 season thus far.

Is that right. Rafa could be number 1 again??? That’s amazing. So he doesnt need to win the tournament and Murray not winning the title which is highly likely based on his current form.
I have low expectations for Rafa on Grass too now because of his knees. Good news is he didn’t pull out of Queens because of injury or fatigue. It was the recommendation of his doctor to PREVENT injury moving forward. He looks hungry. If he plays hungry He will return to #1 at the end of the tournament. That would be AMAZING considering he’s 31 and all the nagging injuries he’s had and that he basically didn’t play the end of the season last year. The way he bounces back from injury and extends his kingdom from clay to grass to asphalt and beats guys (Roger in his prime then Novak in his prime) he is not expected to beat over and over again… makes me such a fan. Proves he is the best tennis player of all time (if not the greatest).

When Rafa was robbed of the #1 seed at the 2013 French and given the #5 seed, was that right???
To deny Roger a higher seed than Rafa when clearly he is a better grass courter would be the robbery. You can’t have it both ways just because Rafa is your favorite player. I was very pissed the French gave Rafa the #5 seed when at the time he was an 7 time champion there. Well, being objective, Roger is a 7 time champion at Wimbledon and 3 time finalist in addition to the 7 championships… he is CLEARLY better than Rafa on Grass and deserves a higher seed especially as of late. I would argue #2 over Novak and behind Andy.

My comment about the seeding was in response to Rafa’s rank as No. 2 in the world, yet he is seeded behind world Nos. 4 and 5. I think all slams should have the same rules.

It would be great to see a repeat of the 2008 Wimbledon final but that maybe jumping the gun . Andy’s not playing great and I’m waiting to see what Novak’s form is like on grass when he plays his first match at Eastbourne, but it could be the younger generation that causes the problems this year. Polls have tipped Roger or Rafa to take the title but I guess time will tell.

The young guns have a shot, but I agree that The big 4 are still ahead by a good margin. Roger winning the Aussie and Rafa the French… they are in good form. Man I hope Rafa can meet Roger in the Finals. I pretty much expect Roger in the semis. For Rafa it depends on the draw. If he can get to the second week, he will be dangerous when the grass turns to dirt. Heheheh….
