Spain may be overwhelming favorites in their upcoming Davis Cup World Group Play-off against India, but Rafael Nadal is in no mood to take the hosts lightly.

We have good team. We have a team that really wants to be here and give their best. I think that a team like Spain should be in the World Group and that is why we are here.

Excited to be back in India. I know these players have been practicing here but we will be ready for the confrontation.

I am happy to be back. I had a tough two months and I am happy to be back where I want to be — on the tennis court.

I have been playing in the Davis Cup since I was 17. It is a special feeling to represent your country and there have been some great moments. We had some great success in this competition.

It is always a special feeling to play for your country.

  1. Well done to Spain 2-0 up so far, also well done to del potro who defeated Andy in the first round of the Davis cup . Andy’s had a great year but he’s looking very tired I think he needs to take a rest . Rafa, Roger ,Novak and Andy all seem to be struggling at the moment either with injury or exhaustion with playing to many tournaments.

  2. I hope Rafa feels better soon and hopefully he will get a match in this weekend, it seems the Delhi heat has got to him as apparently in practice he had been making a lot of errors and was seen sitting a lot on the side lines trying to catch his breath and when a string broke he threw his racket on the ground in frustration and kicked it back to his kit bag. This doesn’t sound like our Rafa.Havent seen any of the matches as they are not being televised in the UK ,but a very exciting and close match is going on between Andy and del potro . Come on team GB

  3. Rafa is there, watching Feli. Hope he feels ok 😞 . Feliciano who replaces Rafa looks like melting….humidity and heat must be extreme, so I am glad that captain Conchita decided not to let Rafa play with stomach problems. But sad For indian spectators who wanted to see Rafa play.😞

  7. Want to see Rafael regain some winning fire-there was great disappointment after the U.S. Open exit. Hope Davis Cup energizes him to challenge the higher rank
players-we miss that bite of the winner’s cup!🇪🇸💃🏻👑🏆👍💪👊❤️

  8. Your welcome Mary, don’t know if your a fan of Del Potro but he will be playing but I don’t think Rafa’s great friend Juan Monaco is . Should be a great match up Andy against Del Potro after the match they played in the Olympics, not the same as seeing Rafa I know but still worth watching .

  9. Good luck to Rafa and his team in the Davis cup ,Mary no I don’t think Spain Vs India is being shown in the UK I’m afraid . Great Britain vs Argentina is being shown on Eurosport 1 on Friday ,that should be good to watch especially if Del Potro and Monaco are playing for Argentina.

  10. What a wonderful photo of Rafa! He has a killer smile and looks happy. I agree that the Indian team is weak, but it is impressive how the top Spanish players are united. I am glad Rafa is now number 4, but he is 8th in the Race to London. I would love Rafa to have a great end of year! The most important thing, however, is that he stays healthy and happy!

    • Why wouldn’t the Spanish team be united? Has there been dissention among the members?

I will comment that Rafa reportedly kept the team waiting for an hour to take the bus to go practice. He eventually arrived at the courts, with some staff members, so I wonder what detained him and why he didn’t inform his teammates. Just curious.

      • Hi Margo, I was trying to shorten my comments. I meant that the top players were on the team again after missing some competitions due to injuries and other commitments. Spain wants to return to the World Group.

      • Hi to you va4favre, glad to see fans keeping up with news on Rafa. Glad you brought up the World Group (Cup?) and Spain’s desire to rejoin. I don’t know much but will read up on it.

I see you mentioned his 8th spot in the Race to London, I just hope he makes it because, if not, that will be a huge letdown for him. He was 6th or 7th before this most recent update. I was worried then.

To be honest, I think Rafa reached 14 slam titles because of his raw talent. In the beginning, his lifelong coach had something to offer but Tony was never slam material. As Rafa got even better there was no need to look for an additional coach but when he started struggling an additional “someone” may have helped. I don’t even think about him getting another team member cause it won’t happen. I mention this because I’ve heard so many professional commenters talking about how Magnus has helped Stan. Especially how Stan won this USOpen. How nuanced his playing was. That’s what made me realize it’s Rafa’s raw talent that got him where he is.

      • Margo, I have given up on the new coach idea. Rafa is probably not going to change. In fairness, he does have Roig too as another voice. Also, at the Davis Cup, he has the Spanish team coach. Rafa actually has quite a few tournaments this fall so he will have opportunities to make the London WTF. Three are confirmed already–Novak, Andy and Stan. The next five are Raonic, Kei, Thiem, Monfils and Rafa. Not sure I have that order right. They are all bunched together. Rafa has made it 12 years in a row, so it would be a big blow to miss it.

      • OK, I was worried when I first answered you today because I had Rafa in 8, but I had Thiem in 9.

I gave Rafa Thiem’s score (3,205). Only 5 points difference, so if it were just between those two, Thiem at 3,200 could have pushed Rafa to #9. I was looking at screen upside down. LOL

Rafa will be in the Race to London.

        RAFA ROCKS FOREVER

  11. Happy to see Rafa on the team. By all accounts, the Spanish team will demolish the much weaker Indian team. It may not be a contest at all.

It would be nice if RNF could bring more to the table than just recycled articles posted here days after I’ve read them on the Internet.

  12. Great to see rafa back playing for spain. Does anyone know if any sports channel in england is showing the matches? I am sure that it will be shown in spain and india but all ive seen advertised is argentina vs great britain which is understandable.

    • There is the option to watch on http://www.rtve.es on a live stream of teledeporte but you need to install a VPN host named “Hotspot Shield” or “Tunnelbear”. (Those two are very good). They switch your IP adress to Spain or other countries (you can switch between countries by paying a monthly or yearly access). It’s worth it. I first used it at the olympics and fell in love with spanish tv commentator as well because they are always speaking so positively about Rafa :D.
