Toni Nadal Felt Deep Pride Seeing Rafa Celebrated in Paris

Uncle Toni has been by Rafael Nadal’s side since the very first day he picked up a tennis racket — and the rest, as they say, is history. At yesterday’s emotional tribute ceremony at Roland Garros, the bond between uncle and nephew was on full display, showing just how deeply Rafa appreciates everything Toni has done for him:

“You are the reason I’m here. Training, talking, deceiving me, making me laugh, always pushing me to the limit. What we’ve been through hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth it (…) You are the best coach I could have ever had.”

Those words struck a chord — not only with Toni, but with everyone who’s followed Rafa’s career from the early Mallorca days to the global stage. Toni responded with his usual mix of humility and insight, sharing on Tiempo de Juego:

“Rafa knows that even if I hadn’t been there, he still would’ve made it here.”

Of the two great tributes Paris has given him (being a torchbearer for the Olympic Games and having a plaque unveiled on the center court), Toni is clear about which one he values more:

“I’ll stick with today’s recognition, because while carrying the Olympic torch was a special and very televised moment, this is a tribute to an entire career.”

And above all, there’s the eternal affection that the French fans have for Rafa Nadal:

“Rafael is, above all, a tennis player. To be recognized in that way in a country that isn’t your own is obviously deeply satisfying, emotional, and fills you with immense gratitude toward the organizers and the French public. The ovation we witnessed today is hard to surpass.”

It’s hard to picture Rafa’s career without Toni’s influence. He didn’t just shape Rafa’s game — he shaped his character. No broken rackets, no excuses, just values. Toni says Rafa would’ve made it anyway… but would he have become this Rafa? What do you think about his words?

  2. We are so proud of Rafa and the celebration of Rafa too! This is something unique that no other tennis player has ever received or will ever receive at Roland Garros! Rafa is simply the best legend we have ever seen and will ever see!

  3. It continues to amaze. Rafa is teaching us yet another lesson in life: how to accept change
and find a new chapter. He is not dictating; he is showing us that as he says, “Tennis is just a game.” You discover a new path, not forgetting what has led you there. He looked blissful, and so grateful for the respect and love from everyone at Roland Garros. What
was instilled in him by Toni Nadal and others, it has not betrayed him. Merci, Rafa🙏❤️

  4. I think we are born with certain traits that can choose to follow in our lives.
