At this year’s Madrid Open, Chinese tennis star Qinwen Zheng shared a charming and heartfelt story that reminded the tennis world why Rafael Nadal isn’t just a champion on the court — but off it, too.

In an interview, Zheng recalled the first time she crossed paths with the 22-time Grand Slam winner. She was starstruck, of course — who wouldn’t be? But out of deep respect, she held back.
“I didn’t ask the picture from Nadal because I don’t want to disturb him,” Zheng explained. “We all know that players don’t want to be disturbed when you’re outside.”
But fate (and a little help from her coach, Álex Riba) had other plans.
As Zheng watched, Riba exchanged a few quiet words with our champ. Moments later, to her surprise, Rafa himself walked up to her.
“So, they chatted together for a while and after that Nadal comes to me and says, ‘Hey, do you want to take a picture?’ and I said yes, that’s how (the conversation) started,” Zheng said with a sheepish smile.

That simple gesture — just a few kind words and a photo — made a deep impact on the rising WTA star. But even more impressively, it inspired her to carry forward the same grace and humility.
“After I saw many times, another fan doing that, facing a young kid — you know they are shy sometimes to ask you for a picture — so I do the same what Rafa did to me: ‘Hey, come for a picture!’” she added with a laugh.
Rafa’s Ripple Effect
In a sport often filled with egos and spotlights, this story is a gentle reminder of why Rafa remains so beloved. Not just for his records. Not just for his fight. But for moments like this — unseen, unasked for, and unforgettable.
