Roger Federer Reveals Rafael Nadal Called Him Last Week

When Roger Federer appeared on the “Today” show on Tuesday to promote a book of photos celebrating his tennis career, he was also asked about his long-time rival and friend, Rafael Nadal.

Q: What about your friend Rafa Nadal, because we know of your rivalry, we also know of your deep friendship, he’s been injured, he’s not at the US Open. Have you talked to him? What do you think about where he’s at right now?

Roger Federer: I actually just spoke to him this last week. He wanted to ask me something, and we had a chat. I felt a little bit sorry for him that his summer didn’t go as well as planned, because at French Open he had a tough draw. Olympics yeah, the tough draw as well. He was hoping also to make a medal, of course with Alcaraz in the doubles. But overall he can do whatever he wants. He’s been one of the most iconic tennis players who ever had in our sport and that’s also what I told him. So I just hope he can go at his terms and the way he wants to. But he’s a great guy, great career, and I’m happy we had so many moments with Novak, Murray. Me, the four of us.

Q: It’s iconic, including, like we just rolled the video tape, I can never watch this and not cry, you and Rafa.

Roger Federer: Oh at the retirement. I’m laughing now, but then it was emotional.

Q: But the Laver Cup is coming up, maybe that’s when all tennis greats should come and play their last match.

Roger Federer: Say goodbye, maybe. But it would be great if, of course, if Rafa can play at the Laver Cup. He’s said he’s gonna play that, but you know again, he can do whatever he wants. That was the incredible moment in my career. And also saying in the Aussoline book there’s also gonna be pictures of me and Rafa together like that.

Q: Oh good, I hope Rafa gets the whole chapter.

We are sure there will be a chapter for Rafa in Fed’s book! You can watch the full interview below to find out more about what the Swiss legend had to say.

    • You may be right but I can’t see him choosing to play his last ever match in Germany. I would expect it to be in Spain in front of his own people. If Spain gets through their Davis Cup matches in Valencia next week he may want to end his career at the finals in Malaga. Plus he did commit to the Six Kings event in October. He will let us know in his good time.

  1. Roger knows how to do business. First a documentary, and now a book. It costs 125 dollars (was shocked when I saw the price) and the signed ones are sold out!
