She said: “He won in Madrid already in the past. If he has to choose a tournament it probably wouldn’t be Madrid because of the conditions compared to what he likes with the altitude.

“It looks like he has no choice. Will he be in Madrid? We hope so. Maybe also Rome. We hope Rafa has enough matches to come to Roland Garros in good condition. It’s getting harder and harder but we have to remember that Rafa mentally is someone very special. For sure he’s giving the best he can to be prepared and ready to be at his best in Paris in a few weeks, but he knows the situation much better than us.”

Nadal has been struggling in 2023 with injury, and his return date is still unknown, but Norman (Wawrinka’s coach) is refusing to rule the 36-year-old out of winning a 15th Roland Garros crown.

“It will be difficult [for him to show his usual form], but if he is healthy, he is a champion and I hope he plays well. You never have to rule out Nadal, [Andy] Murray or Djokovic. Nadal has won many Grand Slams.”

Norman added, “It’s not going to be easy, because the competition is tougher, but he’s going to find a way to play well and win big tournaments this year too.”

Speaking at a post-match press conference in Paris, Medvedev said:

“I believe Rafa will play the French Open, although I’m not in his body. I don’t want to talk for him. But he will be a favorite, even if he didn’t play before. He won 14 times this Grand Slam, so he will be the favorite.”

Andy Roddick: “For the rest of his career, he is going to draw a bright red circle around the French Open and do everything in his power to get matches going in. This is a real concern if he’s missing out on Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, and Madrid. He’s a diesel engine, he needs those reps going into events. This is very concerning for Rafa fans.”
