In the early hours of Saturday morning, after a joint press conference with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal told Spanish reporters at London’s O2 Arena he needed to return home.

“I’m not good, I’m not good,” Nadal said. “The truth is these have been difficult weeks in that sense. Few, very few hours of sleep, a bit of stress in general, slightly more difficult situations than usual at home.

“As a result, well, I’ve had to deal with all that, which is a different pressure to the one you’re used to in your professional life. But, well, luckily everything is good and we are much more calm. And in that sense, I’ve been able to come here, which for me was the most important thing.”

Rafa has struggled with an abdominal injury for much of the summer. The pain caused him to pull out before his semifinal at Wimbledon and he then suffered more problems with it after losing in the fourth round of the US Open.

  1. Now that this weekend has come to an end we wish you all the best for the next chapter in your and Mery’s lives – just put this behind you even if you only play again next year make sure you have recovered from your injury which we hope is not too bad.

  2. Rafa te deseo a ti y Mary muchas bendiciones con tu primer hijo y que Dios los bendiga a todos y un parto sano y lijero para Mary. Cuídate y les deseo mucha salud a todos.
    Quien te quiere mucho!

  3. Praying for Rafa. Seems like he just needs a break from the chaos and some down time to rest his head and body. I’m sure he wants to be with his wife and family. Rafa, I don’t know if you ever read our comments but we faithful love you dearly and are here for you. Sometimes (all the time) you just have to let Jesus take the wheel and trust that the pressure is not on you. Praying for a safe and healthy delivery of your first born son. ♥️♥️

  4. Everyone should have a friend like Rafa. He has more than enough worries and stresses of his own right now, but he still turned up to support his friend Roger – and it was more than just playing a match. I don’t think he would have come to London otherwise. It sounds like he thought about staying on at LC, in the Spanish part of the presser he spoke of going back to the hotel to think about what to do, that there was a personal conflict. I’m glad he decided he’d done enough. I hope everything goes well for him, for Mery and their child.

    • Rafa is the most genuine and authentic friend and supporter that one can have. That’s why we admire him more than any other athlete or sportsman. You can see the genuinely strong and true bond and friendship that Rafa and Federer share. Love it! 🙂

  5. Much love to you Rafa and Maria as you await
the arrival of Baby Rafa.. Congratulations !
Our prayers are with you .Thank you for all you have brought to our lives with your incredible good sportsmanship, discipline and graciousness and a brilliant tennis. We look forward to the arrival of your little son.❤️❤️👏

  6. I hope all is well back home Rafa . It’s been a rough week for you. Baby on the way and then Roger retiring happy, sad , joyful all at once. Please stay healthy. Maybe you can talk Roger out of retirement if you both went into doubles. it would make your career’s last longer and having fun at the same time with your best friend. a win win any way you look at it. Peace and Love to you and yours.

  7. TennisWorld.com reports, without naming a source, that Rafa still has problems with the ab. I thought he played the match rather well and gave Roger the chance to serve for the match. He wanted to win the match for Roger and did all that he could.

First things first, Rafa wants to be there for Mery.

    • Rafa told Spanish media that he broke his abs in New York again. What a bad luck, he really needs time to get better and this season is probably over.

  8. God bless you and your dear wife Rafa. He will also bless you both with your first precious baby son. Please stay well. Love you. Mary Lynn

  9. Hopefully we’ll hear within.the next few weeks that the baby has arrived safely and Mery is well. It seems to have been a difficult pregnancy and I’m sure Rafa will be glad to be home.
