Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the upcoming U.S. Open warm-up tournament in Montreal, citing a continued abdominal injury that forced him to withdraw ahead of his Wimbledon semifinal with Nick Kyrgios.

Rafa posted on Twitter:

“From the vacation days and my subsequent return to training, everything has gone well these weeks.”

“Four days ago I also started training the service and yesterday, after training, I had a little discomfort that was still there today.

“We have decided not to travel to Montreal and continue with the training sessions without forcing ourselves.

“I sincerely thank the tournament director, Eugene and his entire team for the understanding and support they have always shown me and today was no exception.

“I hope to play again in Montreal, a tournament that I love and that I have won five times in front of an audience that has always welcomed me with great affection.

“I have no choice but to be prudent at this point and think about health.”

  1. According to the Grand Stand email I received today:

“Djokovic may be out, but Cincinnati will have Rafael Nadal in the field. Nadal announced earlier this week that he is ready to return and he was already seen practicing at the venue on Thursday.”

Going to look for more news on Rafa. Anyone else know about this? Please post if you do. Thanks

    • Margo, not sure what you are looking for except more complete news stories. Its been out for two days that Rafa would be playing the Western and Sourthern Open and arriving on Thursday. Also that he would be playing an exhibition in New York on August 24.

Instagram may have had the news first and then ATPTour.com and Tennis.com. But where is our website on the story? And when will the Cincinnati draft results be out?

      • Hi David and Margo,

It’s out. I think Rafa has a nice draw too.
        Vamos Rafa💪❤️

      • Geez Mimi, sorry to have forgotten to thank you for answering my plea for help…LOL The “nice draw” part put a smile on my face.

    • David, I didn’t see anything here and that’s why I asked if other RNF’s knew anything about Rafa playing/being in Cincy. When Rafa is out because of injury I usually wait to hear from RNF and there was nada here from them or from fans.

After I posted my comment I did find out that the draw is out, that Rafa in not defending any points, that he could return to #1, and will play an exhibition match[es] to support Ukraine. I also receive notifications from the ATP but nothing in my inbox from them. You kinda make it sound as if I’ve been living under a rock [probably have 😂]. All’s good.

  2. Good luck Rafa! Hope you feel 100% fit for Cinci and the US.
At the moment Kyrgios looks to be the biggest threat to the men. As much as I dislike him he’s playing great!

Rafa you can do it, so VAMOS!

  3. very good that he is playing. He should test himself against krygios, medvedev and others on hardcourt. I believe that nadal can win cincinnati and win his 26 titel on hardcourt

  4. It’s great to learn that Nadal is definitely participating in Cincinnati after a gap of 5 years. If all goes well and his body holds, Nadal will regain #1 ranking if he wins the tournament provided Medvedev loses out before the QF in Cincinnati.

Nadal also has a great prospect for ending the year as #1 for the 6th time, thus surpassing Federer (5 times #1 year-end ranking) and equaling Sampras (6 times #1 year-end ranking). Djokovic holds the all-time Open era record with 7 times ending the year as #1.

  5. ATPtour.com announced today that Rafa will be playing Carlos in an exhibition event on August 24 just prior to the US Open to benefit the people of Ukraine. Tickets are on sale now. Other stars are playing in singles and doubles matches as well.

Carlos lost today to Tommy Paul in Montreal. He has been losing quite a bit lately.

Lorna, just a note that Rafa has been practicing forehands and backhands for several weeks now. It would be a really good sign if he is adding the serve because that is the movement that has been bothering the ab.

    • @David Holtzman,
Rafael Nadal and Alcaraz are indeed listed along with other stars like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini, John McEnroe, Coco Gauff, Leylah Fernandez, Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula and Victoria Azarenka to play various singles and mixed doubles matches on 24 August to benefit the people of Ukraine under the Tennis Peace programme.

However, as the detailed schedule has not been announced, Rafa and Alcaraz may or may not square off against each other.

  6. Hugely disappointing and obviously concerning that Rafa can play the US Open . Notwithstanding this sad news , I am hopeful for Rafa and his being able to play Cincinnati as he needs to be able to get his match play together if he plans on making it to the US Open .

  7. I just noticed that if Rafa has to miss Cincy with the ab problem he could still enter the Winston Salem 250 as a warm up to the US Open the following week.

Normally I would say that Rafa is unlikely to do that except that entering the 250 just before the AO worked out pretty well.

  8. Its not a surprise by any means. Better safe than sorry. Yes we would all love to see him play right now, but this would damage his prospects for USO which is more important. Get back to 110% fit Rafa..Vamos

  9. Not too surprised since it was always going to be a close call by having to take four weeks off from the serve before beginning again. Rafa may not get to Cincy either and may be out until the week prior to the US Open. To me this shows the wisdom of withdrawing from Wimbledon has he could really have done some damage had he continued.

  10. Hope recover soon. It’s amazing to grab 3 grand slam trophies in 2022……😆
