Rafa Roundup: Rafael Nadal named Best Male Tennis Player of the Year

Nadal, meanwhile, was nominated alongside Dylan Alcott, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime for the Best Athlete, Men’s Tennis ESPY Award and he walked away with the crown on the back of a brilliant start to the 2022 season. The Spaniard won the Australian Open at the start of the year and the French Open in June to become the first men’s player win 22 Grand Slams. Nadal also won the award in 2014 and 2011, but he is well short of the Roger Federer’s record of nine ESPY awards while Novak Djokovic has won five. Serena Williams, meanwhile, has 10 ESPY awards to her name.

“Nadal really wants to come to Montreal and his hotel rooms are already booked,” tournament director for the Montreal edition of the Canada Masters, Eugene Lapierre, explained. He also revealed that the Spaniard would return to training today, 11 days after pulling out of Wimbledon.

“He has asked us to send him a case of the balls we’re using for the tournament to prepare,” Lapierre continued. “He should return to training on Monday.” When announcing his withdrawal from Wimbledon, Nadal admitted that it wouldn’t be long before he returned to the practice court though serves would remain off-limits.

Rafael Nadal once more showcased his prowess on the golf course, leading his tennis academy’s golf team to a joint-first place finish in the 4th leg of the FBG Hexagonal Circuit team competition in Mallorca on Sunday.

The Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy team finished alongside the Balneario Illetas and Gran Folies Beach Club’s golf team with a total score of 96 in the scratch scoring, with the 22-time Grand Slam champion shooting their best score (37 Stableford).

“I’ve never seen anyone like him,” McEnroe told Tennis365 in an exclusive interview.

“I thought Jimmy Connors tried hard until I saw Rafael Nadal, this is insane. And that’s the greatest quality he has, by far. I mean, the guy’s an unbelievable player, we all know that. But the fact that he can go out there and give that type of effort, you know, match in and match out, game in and game out, is something that people aspire to, but it’s very difficult to do.

  1. Not denying Emma her due, but was hoping Iga would get the ESPY as she had such a great streak.

  2. We’ll deserved Rafa! Congratulations!!! Trust you’ll return well and fit!
    Good luck!!!

  3. Congratulations on the ESPY, Rafael Nadal. This was a no-brainer as it is not just that he won AO and reclaimed Roland Garros, but that he had to overcome so much in order to succeed. After he beat TF at Wimby, the tournament was anti-climactic. Enjoy Montreal, Rafa-stay healthy👏💪👍🤛🍀🎾❤️

    • Oh that adorable smile!! A richly deserved award for Rafa who has fought hard to achieve a very good year so far, against the odds. Not sure why Emma Raducanu got the women’s award though, as she hasn’t done well since the US Open last year.

    • I stayed up and watched the Espys and was so sad no tennis..
I voted for Rafa of course.
Congratulations Rafa.. Good luck with rehab and hope you win our US Open

      • I did too, but fell asleep a few times. I enjoyed Steph Curry’s jokes though.😂

  5. Rafa totally deserves that award.
He’s worked so hard as an excellent tennis player.
I’m totally looking forward for Rafa at his next tournament in Montreal. Then the US Open.
Long live the GOAT of tennis.
