Rafa Roundup: “Every time Nadal steps on court it’s like he is playing a final of a Grand Slam,” says Sinner

“Nobody in the history of the Open Era won twice in every single event. I mean, I don’t find a real reason, he said. “I think I had the big chance in 2014. I got injured during the match on the back. It was a tough one.

“Then I had another good chance in 2012, another good chance in 2017 with a break up in the fifth. I just didn’t win the match.

“That’s all, I can’t find another reason. It is true that I missed a couple of Australian Opens for injuries, too.”

‘Spending that time with Rafa was fantastic, I learnt a lot on every level,’ says Sinner. ‘What was great for me to see about Rafa, as I see from other champions, is the impressive way in which he thinks and approaches every practice and every ball.

‘He is a super nice and humble person and something I really learnt from him was the intensity he puts into every single practice. Every time he steps on court it’s like he is playing a final of a Grand Slam.

‘I got a lot out of spending two weeks training with him, and I feel blessed and honoured that he chose me to prepare for such an important event like the Australian Open. I also really liked his team, they are all friendly, fun and really nice people.’

Craig Tiley, The Australian open Tournament Director, was quizzed over the worrying situation with the No.2 seed Nadal when he said,

“I see Rafa every day. He practised for 90 minutes today. Out of extra caution he chose not to play the ATP Cup even though Spain have made the semi finals. I’m sure he’ll show up and support his team. He’s indicated he’ll be ready for the Australian Open on Monday. He’s protecting his opportunity to win a 21st Grand Slam singles title. He’s tied with Roger on 20 with Novak 3 behind. There’s a race in the men’s game to be the all time leader.”

  1. Wishing Rafa a win but I also hope Rafa listens to his body. Be well Champ. Hoping for a quick SS match.

    RAFAMAZING ROCKS

  2. Congratulations to Jannik Sinner winning the last trophy before the open last night. Hope he recovered well and will be ready to face D. Shapovalov.

Good luck to Rafa and Jannik🍀

    • Aww….he just missed beating Shapo. He seems to be playing a lot so I hope he gets enough rest before his next match.

      • Sorry, Just saw that Sinner is not in the doubles so his A.O. is over. Not sure where he will play next but he should manage to be well rested before the start of another tournament.

That was a tough break having to play right away instead of on Tuesday. He just stated that it was invaluable for him to train with Rafa for 2 weeks and that made the trip to Australia worth it.

      • ☹️ Too bad Jannik and Stefano Travaglia had such short time to recover, Stefano lost to F. Tiafoe as well. Good luck to Jannik the rest of the season🍀
