World No. 1 Rafael Nadal will take part in an exhibition match to raise money for a bushfire relief fund in Australia.

The match is scheduled for 15 January, five days before the start of the Australian Open, and will take place at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.

Roger Federer will also be playing, along with Serena Williams, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Naomi Osaka, Nick Kyrgios and Caroline Wozniacki, but more stars are expected to be confirmed for the event in coming days.

“I’m here for whatever is needed, be it a personal donation or participating in the event to raise funds. Personally, if there is something that impresses me when I’m travelling is visiting natural places. It is very sad that many lives are lost. I wish this nightmare will finish as soon as possible,” Rafa said in Perth.

“For a period of about two-and-a-half hours we’re going to be showcasing the game, but also coming together as a community to play our part in the relief effort,” said Craig Tiley, Tennis Australia chief executive and Australian Open tournament director.

Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.

  1. Such a genuine man with a huge heart. Not afraid to show his humility for others. Always willing to help in any way he is able.
Just a fine human being. I commend his parents for raising a unique man. He obviously has his priorities in check.
It’s people like Rafa that make people like me want to watch professional sports.
For his love of the game and respect for the sport and his opponents.

  2. So good to see that Rafa is amongst the top players who will be participating. Novak’s name isn’t there, but i expect that he’ll play his part.

  3. No surprise there from Rafa. I’ve always known him to be altruistic and socially aware over the course of his career. Thank you, Rafa!
