Top seed and world No. 1 Rafael Nadal is back in action on Thursday at the US Open and will face world No. 121 Taro Daniel.

The New York-born Daniel booked a spot in the second round of the season’s last Grand Slam when he battled past American wildcard Tommy Paul 6-1, 4-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

With no rain forecast, the $100 million roof that contributed to Rafa’s annoyance in the first round should be wide open.

Rafa has never played the 24-year-old before.

Taro Daniel on playing Rafa:

When I got off court, I didn’t know who I would be playing. But then I found out it was Nadal and I thought, ‘Oh God!’ I didn’t realise it. It’s really exciting but I need a few hours to let it sink in.

I know it will be on a big court so that will be exciting. But it could also be nerve-wracking.

I need to go in excited and just hope that he doesn’t come out too powerful. (via Reuters)

GOOD LUCK & VAMOS RAFA!

  1. Stars are lining up for nadal. All the opponents that could provide a threat in his draw are going out one by one. Berdych and dimitrov both gone. Federer is clearly struggling. I don’t think he will even reach the quarterfinal and even if he makes it to semis against nadal, injured fed will be nothing against nadal. This us open is nadal’s to lose. This kind of golden opportunity does not come all the time. Do not blow it nadal.

  2. Rafa, any minute now [ok, maybe an hour] for your match. Can’t wait. Do not follow the Fed. He just completed his second five-set match. He’s getting more tired as the days go by. Wishing you a three-set win.

May the strength of the bull be with you in body and mind.

    RAFA ROCKS THE US OPEN

  3. berdych out, dimitrov out maybe federer out. I hope nadal doesnt get nervous about this and that he will screw up his match. The final is basically wide open for him unbelievable. Please moya dont tell him that that can put him off guard

  4. Wow! Don’t know if anyone is watching the Federer match , but Roger is struggling big time . At this rate Rafa will have nothing to worry about ,and his number 1⃣ spot will be safe . I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Come on Youzhny , keep the pressure on.

    • Hi Maria. Started watching it a few mins ago. I saw bits of his 1st round match and he just scraped through. If Roger gets this one no doubt he’ll crank it up a notch so he’s peaking for rafa. Yes I’m hoping rafa gets that far too.

      • Hi Susie , might be wishful thinking but wouldn’t it be great to see Roger go out tonight, then Rafa can relax a bit ,as I’m sure keeping the number 1⃣ spot is playing on his mind especially with his comment about Andy . Are you watching Rafas’s match later ? night be a little late for me.

      • Lol – yes it would be brilliant if Roger went out tonight. He has enough slams this year and robbed rafa of the AO. I’m not convinced that there’s anything wrong with his back and thought it was just an excuse as he lost to sascha. But I could be wrong. I don’t think rafa should relax too much. Needs to stay focused as he was at the FO but there must be so much pressure on him to retain the no1 spot I don’t envy what he must be going through . Looks like roger’s having a second bloody wind listening to these cheers. Yes I’m going to watch rafa’s match if my body allows it. I’m going to have a little sleep now and see if I can wake up for 2am. Its what i usually try and do. Wouldn’t do that for anyone but rafa though!!

    • Oh no i think youzhny is injured – defo hobbling. Typical that Roger gets the luck. We will see though as despite the injury youzhny has broken back. There go my sleep plans

      • I’d get some 😴💤 Susie , as this match looks like it’s going in one direction now , and the Jolly Roger flag will be flying high at the end . Damn it😣

      • Damn it indeed. But at least Roger isn’t looking invincible which is something I suppose.

  5. I wish you all the best in this tournament.
Please,do me a favour and win this round twe match.
    Good luck.

  6. I love the comments from Taro. Seems like he plans to stand there in awe as Rafa crushes him, just as scripted.

  7. Now Federer fans will also hope and expect one of Federer’s opponents also to say the same thing about Federer so that he will still be considered as the undisputed GOAT. And what is more ATP and USO might provide incentives for federer’s opponents to say just something like that

  8. There was a surge of confidence when you won the first set😁 You became the warrior that we recognize👺 BTW keep wearing those bright colours-looking
fantastic with a tan! Good luck against Daniel.

  9. Good luck champ
Please stay away from five setters
In Sha Allah it wd be smooth sailing for Rafa today….My Best wishes are always with you along with your super fans here
    Vamosssssss Rafa 😎😍😘🤗😚💪💪

      • Jason as an atheist I agree Allah should not be involved, but in the same vein neither should “god bless you” or “I pray for your success”. Unless you protest against those sentiments too, you risk being just Islamophobe. I do not see what “enough damage is done” by saying Ishallah or praying as a catholic or whatever other belief. They are all positive sentiments.

        More relevant for Rafa is

        WAMOS WAMOS WAMOS

    • Hi khawartaimoor – I believe it’s Eid tomorrow so I wish you Eid Mubarak. Enjoy yourself and here’s hoping you can doubly smile if rafa wins today.

    • I was shocked to read those comments. Don’t pay any attention to haters. I’ve seen God mentioned here a gazillion times, no one ever said anything. Why now, I ask myself. No, I am not an atheist.

      • Thanks a million Susie,Margo and Puma for the support….I don’t want to defend or criticize anyone here on religion….I hope we are only here for Rafa so, only support Rafa here
I thought we are all like family here but Rainier and Margo are right on that hate topic
May Allah bless all of us
Congrats to all of you on Great win for Rafa
        AlhamduLillah

    • Hi Amberoxx – I watch the matches through eurosport on sky but I’m in the UK. Apart from this I’m unsure how to get to see the matches plus I don’t know where you are based. Sorry I know that’s probably not much help.

  10. Give it all you got RAFA – love you – you are the best and always will be for me.
    VAMOS RAFA –
