Rafael Nadal turned on his television at home in Mallorca on Sunday for the final day of Spain’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off against Brazil and proceeded to watch something he had not seen since he was 12. For the first time since 1999, Spain suffered a shock defeat on clay with Thomaz Bellucci the local hero as he clinched a 3-1 victory for Brazil which condemned the five-time champions to relegation. Nadal’s absence due to a wrist injury is one of the reasons why depleted Spain now find themselves in Euro/Africa Zone Group I, a level they have not been a part of since 1996.

Rafael Nadal is scheduled return to action this month, playing an exhibition in Kazakhstan the week before Beijing. The Spaniard will take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, according to the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation. The two will hold a clinic for young players in the city of Astana, as well as an autograph session for students during a two-day trip.

“Ahora no tiene nada, lo único que a la hora de pegar el revés no tiene que pegar a máxima intensidad por precaución. Está a un 8o por ciento. Si ahora hubiese un torneo esta semana, no lo jugaría. El 24 (de septiembre) tiene una exhibición en Astana (Kazajistán) y después juega Pekín y Shanghái” .

  1. I join with all the other commentators in expressing my joy about Rafa’s return to tennis! My hope is that his wrist will continue to heal so that he’ll have a 100% recovery, rather than his present 80% recovery, per Uncle Tony. VAMOS, RAFA!

  2. We so look forward to seeing Rafa playing soon! I loved the comment by Diane “no one brings the heat like Rafa” Could not agree more. Love the sleeve-less shirt. Makes sense.
    Vamos Rafa

  3. Such exciting news! No tennis player brings the heat like Rafa does. Can’t wait to watch him compete again. Maybe he’ll have some new tennis moves and tricks up his sleeve or
    sleeveless! Vamos, Rafa!
