Captain Carlos Moya has named a depleted team led by 19th-ranked Roberto Bautista for Spain’s Davis Cup World Group playoff against Brazil this month. The top three Spaniards – injured world number two Rafa Nadal, number five David Ferrer and 18th-ranked Tommy Robredo – are all unavailable so Marcel Granollers and doubles specialists Marc Lopez and David Marrero come into the team for the Sao Paulo tie on Sept. 12-14.

I think the guys from the second line were a bit lucky because Andy Murray was also having trouble with his back; [Stan] Wawrinka was up and down with his tennis after Australia; few other players were not playing at the best all the time,” said Cilic. “And Rafa is not here, so that opened the gate a little bit for everybody else. I feel it’s going to definitely be much bigger competition from next year.”

Remember when Fernando Verdasco took Rafael Nadal through five grueling sets in the 2009 Australian Open semifinals? All the pundits said Rafa would be gassed for the final and thus Federer, Nadal’s final-round opponent, would cake-walk to the title. And what happened? The final also went to five sets — and Rafa won.

  1. Congratulations to Marin Cilic on winning the US Open. He played LIGHTS OUT TENNIS against Berdych, Federer & Nishikori, winning all 3 matches in straight sets. No doubt that his new coach, Goran Ivanisevic, had a LOT to do with his great play, especially his much-improved serve & forehand.
Also, congratulations to Kei Nishikori and his new coach, Michael Chang, for his AMAZING run to the final, taking out Raonic, Wawrinka & Djokovic along the way.
This is why I’ve been saying over & over & over again that Rafa should hire a big name coach – like Cilic & Nishikori did – to FURTHER IMPROVE his game. Mats Wilander, Jimmy Connors, Martina Navratilova, Larry Stefanki & Paul Annacone are all available, and would surely jump at the opportunity to coach Spain’s raging bull.
    VAMOS!!!

    • I don’t think Rafa will change uncle Tony at all, Rafa has 14 slams and he’s happy it’s all about the player on court and their mental, physical and emotional strength and Rafa is a warrior on court, he plays as if the court is his all over he can hit passing shots from, any angles he can produce magic that no other player can do. He has success and he said he will never add another coach he will retire with uncle Tony

  2. I was happy for Marin Clilic winning his first GS. However, I did miss Rafa’s fire, passion and star power at the 2014 US Open! With that being said, I just can’t wait to see him fully
recovered so he can compete again. His presence alone is so epic.
