Rafael Nadal has chosen as the Athlete of the Month by the United States Sports Academy based on the results of an online poll. Among female athletes, professional golfer Michelle Wie earned the same title.
“Nadal won the men’s French Open in Paris, France, by defeating Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4 on June 8th. The victory for Rafa was his record ninth French Open title and was his 14th Grand Slam title. He holds a 66-1 record at the French Open all-time,” the USSA wrote on its website on Tuesday.
The USSA determines candidates for Athlete of the Month after receiving recommendations from journalists, sports organizations, government agencies and the public.
As Rafa and Wie were chosen as the athletes for June, they are now candidates for Athlete of the Year.

Wow, what a special honor! So well deserved! To a great sportsman of sterling character and grace every month of the year. But I am so glad he was recognized and celebrated for this award in June. To win a grand slam once is so tough but to win it 9X at the same grand slam is simply marvelous and remarkable. Rafa is the only person who can even break his own record. What a “Field of Dreams” he has created over the years of his illustrious career. And the world loves him for it.
