Rafael Nadal defeated Finnish Jarkko Nieminen 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals at the Madrid Open. His opponent will be Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.
Rafa, who is making his 12th appearance in Madrid, is looking for his 44th clay title with a fourth title in the tournament. He has now made the quarterfinals or better at Madrid every year except 2012, when he lost to Fernando Verdasco in R3 (remember the beloved blue clay?!). Today’s victory marks Rafa’s 304th on clay, the most among any active player.
