Rafael Nadal defeats Stanislas Wawrinka to reach semifinals at World Tour Finals in London

Rafael Nadal cinched the Year End No. 1 title and a semifinal berth by defeating Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6(5),7-6(6). Rafa is the first man to take the spot 3 years after his last Year End No. 1 ranking, in 2010.

Wawrinka came into the match with a 0-11 record, having never won a single set against Rafa in all their encounters. Six of Rafa’s victories over Wawrinka were on hard courts, the most recent being at the quarterfinals in Shanghai. The first set seemed an easy take for Rafa, with him being up a break until 5-4, when Wawrinka broke back. The set went to an exciting tiebreaker, with Rafa taking it at 7-6(5). The second set started evenly but ended up a rollercoaster with Rafa breaking at 2-1 to take an eventual 4-1 lead, but getting broken and leveled to 5-5. He took the set and the match at 7-6(6) after yet another nail-biting tie breaker.

Since Rafa took the match in straight sets, he qualifies for the semifinals today. Stay tuned for more information and updates.

Congratulations, Champion!
