“There are always doubts… I had them at 20 and 22, and still at 36 and a half [years]. It’s a gift, to still be active for another year.

“I am very excited,” he was quoted as saying in Spanish. “We will have to find little by little the way the season will start, there are always doubts… I had them at 20 and 22, and still at 36 and a half [years]. It’s a gift, to still be active for another year.”

“It’s great, but he has a sort of switch,” he said.

“He switches on and off on his personal side. I’m not going to go into all the details or whatever, but it’s really fun to be around. He’s not as serious and dedicated as he is on court. He likes to have fun. He dances around a little bit and enjoys a good glass of wine, for example, for dinner. I don’t think he will be bothered me telling this, but he’s a fun guy.

“We had a lot of fun and he has sort of taken me under his wings a little bit with the [Rafael Nadal] Academy and it was fun to be very close to him. Of course, we were in the same hotels all the time, flying around together, so we got to see him up close more and it was fun. He’s a really relaxed guy.”

Since first breaking into the Top 10 as an 18-year-old on April 25th, 2005, Nadal has never, ever left the elite, not even for a second—and now, at age 36, he’s still in there, currently sitting at No. 2.

He surpassed Jimmy Connors’ previous record of 789 in 2020.

Inspired by the “Mediterranean lifestyle”, the new “Zel” chain is expected to open its first hotel in 2023 in Mallorca in the Balearic Islands where 36-year-old Nadal was born and where Melia Hotels International was founded in 1956.

Nadal, one of the world’s two top-ranked tennis players, and Melia, Spain’s leading hotel group which operates more than 400 establishments across the globe, will jointly own the company. They did not specify who would hold what percentage of the shares.
