PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal books spot in second round at Roland Garros with win over Jordan Thompson

21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal made a convincing start to his bid for a 14th Roland Garros title as he beat Australia’s Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 on Monday in Paris. He improved his Roland Garros record to 106 wins and just three losses since his 2005 title-winning debut.

Our champ now has 299 Grand Slam match victories and will face Corentin Moutet in the next round after the French wildcard defeated Stan Wawrinka.

After the match, Rafa said: “Incredible for me to be back here at Roland Garros. Happy to win in straight sets. It is only one match.”

  1. Rafa, you look maahhvelous..… only 6 more to go. All the best on this journey.

    RAFA ROCKS

    • That was a lot of work even though it was 6-2 6-2 6-2…
There was a lot of long rallies! Was happy to see the statue of Rafa & those practices were like a sold out match! Everything’s in order for Rafa’s 14th RG!

    • Yes, I saw his first match on Monday 😀 had a good seat in the Central Court. The roof was open. Does anyone know which hôtel he is staying at in Paris? He is not at his usual one. Fiona in Paris

  2. Wow…Phewww…What a reminder against Thompson. Rang a bell for his hard opponents. Look at the first point Of second set
King has set his foot on his court
Vamos Rafa love your attitude. Onto the next round. 6 to go for RG#14 and GS#22

  3. Honestly, I have gut feeling that Nishioka might just upset Djokovic in 5 sets!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, that will be a ”Thriller in Paris”

    • Great job, Rafa👏 Stay healthy and happy, one match at a time, see you in person soon!
      Vamos Rafa💪🍀❤️

    • Hi Bulleyes,

Sorry, I pressed the wrong button for my post earlier.

      Go Y. Nishioka!💪💪💪

    • Despite lacking in height and not having a potent serve, Nishioka can still have a slim and outside chance against Djokovic since he (Nishioka) is a left-hander and is quite agile all over the court.

On slow courts, Djokovic might have some uncomfortable moments against a spirited lefty who is willing to run around and chase everything. Djokovic sometimes shows vulnerability against left handers – a recent example was his defeat against Jiri Vesely (who was ranked outside 100 in rankings at that time) in Dubai in February this year.

  4. I got a little bit nervy at one point in the second set, but, generally, it went well. And the forecast is better for Wednesday, so the roof should definitely be open again.

  5. Great straight sets victory. All the best in round 2, Rafa. 💪👏🤛👍🍀🎾❤️

  6. Rafa looked excellent from my perspective . He displayed a powerful forehand that was landing just inside the baseline and moved Thompson around like a puppet on a string . If Rafa keeps this form and I expect he will improve on it , I think this will be #14 Roland Garros title and #22 Grand Slam . Nole and Carlos are both favorites but neither can match Rafa when he is on his game on this surface under the sun with the roof open , the conditions that these matches are meant to be played on 🥁 Vamos Rafa and let’s build on this win ?

  7. Great to see he is locked in. Moutet is a tricky opponent in heavier conditions. Don’t forget he defeated Wawrinka in 5 sets, took thiem to 5 in 2020 and the reason was the effectiveness of his drop shots in cold heavy conditions. I hope the weather remains warm and dry but regardless Rafa has to be on guard against him and the crowd and cannot give up room on the baseline. On a side note, Goran is upto his stupid mind games again and trying not so subtly to pile pressure on Rafa.

  8. Well done Rafa. First step is made. Keep it up and all the best for the second round❤️
