The Spaniard missed last week’s Monte Carlo Masters and was then forced to withdraw from this week’s Barcelona Open, leaving the Madrid Masters as the next big clay event he could return at. And Toni Nadal has now confirmed that his nephew is set to travel to the tournament, which begins on May 2. “He told me yes, that he would arrive. Then, we’ll see,” the current coach of ATP No 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime told TVE.

The news comes after the 21-time Major champion finally returned to the practice court after four weeks on Monday, commemorating it with a social media post. His uncle Toni continued: “Yesterday he started training and he still has 15 days left to see how everything evolves. If he arrives in good condition, he will play.”

“I’m not Rafael, like we have different qualities, it’s tough to replicate what Rafael did in his career on clay. So you know, I’m more maybe a hardcourt player, I play well on grass as well. So, of course it’s different strengths.

“He (Toni Nadal) adapted to the player he’s working with. I don’t think he’s approaching it like he wants me to play like his nephew, I think that would be wrong. But anyway he has a great knowledge about tennis and he knows a lot, so, he’s able to help me.”

Chanda Rubin: “It’s just been so nice to see Nadal playing at this level, getting back healthy before the clay-court swing, this is where he is a real factor.”

Social media related to Rafa:

  1. If he feels ok, it’s good for him to get 1 or 2 matches in Madrid, and then much more in Rome before RG starts. He can’t come to Paris without any matches. Also for Australian Open playing Melbourne 250 helped him.

  2. Great News Rafa after keeping us at bay….Love to see you biting another trophy 🏆 of RG 22… just be healthy and careful

  3. This uncle who is no more coach for RAFA and coaches another tennis player should shut up about Rafa

    • That’s a little harsh. Would you do that if you were coaching your nephew all his life and someone asks you about him?

  4. Rafa if you are contemplating Madrid, I wish you every success. I just want you to be fully fit for RG, maybe I’m being selfish with that thought. Just stay well..only you knows how your body feels, so I continue to keep you in 🙏. Vamos
