The ATP rankings were updated yesterday, and Rafael Nadal remains in fifth despite winning his 21st Grand Slam on Sunday. He is now just 295 points behind No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, and has a 1597 points more than No. 6 Matteo Berrettini.
Rafa’s beaten opponent in the Melbourne final, Daniil Medvedev, stays second but the Russian moves to within 1,000 points of Novak Djokovic. The Serb will keep the points he earned from winning his ninth Australian Open title last year till February 21 as last year’s tournament was played at the later dates of February 8-21.

With Dominic Thiem already relegated to ATP #37 and having withdrawn from Cordoba, the chances are that he might remain out of top 32 by the time of Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year. Assuming Roger Federer comes back for Wimbledon (and I really hope he will), Roger would plummet to around ATP #70. Juan Martin Del Potro, who is also likely to return to the tour after having recovered from his injuries, would also seek wildcards at RG and Wimbledon.
The likelihood is that there might be too many dangerous floaters for the next two grand slams especially for Wimbledon. If Roger comes back for Wimbledon this year, he along with Sir Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem, Nick Kyrgios and Juan Martin Del Potro would pose a very serious threat to the top seeds in the first 3 rounds depending on the draw.
As for Rafael Nadal’s ranking, he will overtake Tsitsipas on 21st February to become #4, and the by the time of clay court season leading to RG 2022, Rafa should easily rise to #3 surpassing Zverev.
And if Djokovic does not win ATP500 in Dubai in February, he will lose his #1 ranking to Medvedev. Since Medvedev is likely to play more tournaments than Djokovic, the chances are very high that Medvedev would eventually surpass Djokovic before the start of clay court swing regardless of Djokovic’s result at ATP500 in Dubai.
Najam, Rafa and his team are looking at “floaters” to be sure. And his team will prepare Rafa for whomever he has to play. No matter where Rafa ends up in the rankings he is always going to have challenges and challengers.
Right now he is resting and trying to figure out what his next step is; rest more or get back in the game. No one will know anything until Rafa makes his decision when to return. I am hoping for a VERY healthy Rafa. If he can accomplish that, more than half the battle is won.

Dominic Thiem has dropped to No. 37 in the rankings. At this point he has been away from the tour longer than Rafa was.
I believe Dominic is scheduled to play this week or this month. As he works his way up the rankings this Spring he will prove an early round challenge to all the top ranked players. Dominic is one of the good guys on the tour and a class act.

The WTA already dropped the points from last year’s AO, but the ATP is waiting until the actual one year date. It is Feb. 21st. Novak loses 2000 points, but Medevdev loses 1200. If he had won the AO, Daniil would have bumped Novak from the top. Rafa loses some points too. I think it is around 360, but am not sure.
You are right that N.D. will drop the 2,000 pts. but D.M. made it to the final again so will retain his 1,200 pts. Rafa defended his 360 pts. from last year when he reached the QF and surpassed that by winning which gave him 2,000 pts. in total for this A.O. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
