With Roger Federer’s win over Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal is assured of the year-end world No 1 ranking for the fifth time.

Having previously finished at the top in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017, Rafa is the first player to hold, lose and regain the year-end No. 1 on four occasions. He is also the first player to finish No. 1 five times in non-consecutive years. The 11-year gap between his first year-end No. 1 season (2008) and his last (2019) is also a record.

This is the 16th straight season that the year-end World No. 1 ranking has been held by a member of the ‘Big Four’ — Federer (2004-07, ’09), Nadal (2008, ’10, ’13, ’17, ‘19), Djokovic (2011-12, ’14-15, ‘18) or Andy Murray (2016).

Oldest Year-End No. 1 in ATP Rankings History:

1 – Rafael Nadal , 33, in 2019

2 – Novak Djokovic , 31, in 2018

3 – Rafael Nadal, 31, in 2017

4 – Ivan Lendl, 29, in 1989

5 – Andre Agassi , 29, in 1999

  8. RAFAMAZING! Congrats Rafa on your 5th YE#1! So well deserved. Amazing year. And special grats on being the *oldest* player to achieve it! Rafa has so many “youngest to’s”. Now he’s starting to collect “oldest to’s”. Who’d a thunk it? Not all those commies who started writing him off at 22!

  10. I am so pleased for him. It seems like five minutes since it was 2008 and he was asking a journalist if he was absolutely sure that he’d definitely be world no 1 for the first time in a few weeks’ time. He’s been written off so many times and he’s come back from it all.
