Wimbledon: Nadal will resume his match against Djokovic

(AP) – It was the kind of tennis that Wimbledon’s Centre Court crowd would gladly have watched all night long.

The show being put on by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was so good it could have been an instant classic had they been able to finish their semifinal before the tournament’s 11 p.m. curfew.

Instead, the two players — and a disappointed audience — were sent home after the third set on Friday with Djokovic leading 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9) following a tense tiebreaker that had more entertaining rallies than some entire matches.

The two players didn’t even get onto the court until after 8 p.m. because of an earlier marathon semifinal won by Kevin Anderson and when Djokovic converted his second set point in the tiebreaker — having saved three of Nadal’s — the clock had ticked a couple of minutes past 11. That left organizers no choice but to call it a night, although the announcement from the chair umpire led to a scattering of boos from some fans who clearly wanted more.

Most of them will have to watch the rest on TV.

The match will resume at 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, before the women’s final between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber. At stake is a place in Sunday’s men’s final against the man who was partly at fault for keeping Nadal and Djokovic out there so late. Anderson’s win over John Isner lasted 6 ½ hours and went to 26-24 in the fifth set.

Djokovic-Nadal had clearly been the headline act of the day — they have five Wimbledon titles between them and met in the 2011 final while Anderson and Isner had never made the semifinals before — and their tennis was at another level from the earlier match. Even Anderson said he could feel during his match that the crowd would rather be watching the next one.

“They’ve paid to see two matches, and they came pretty close to only seeing one match,” Anderson said. “I can feel the crowd (get) pretty antsy for us to get off the court. They’ve been watching us for over six hours.”

While Anderson-Isner was mostly a serving duel with a few longer rallies thrown in, Djokovic and Nadal repeatedly slugged it out from the baseline, chasing each other around the court and coming up with spectacular winners from every corner.

Many of the best points came in the tiebreaker, including a 23-shot rally that Nadal finished off with a forehand half-volley drop shot to set up his first set point.

It was one of three successful drop shots from the Spaniard in the tiebreaker alone, but Djokovic answered with one of his own to save the second set point at 7-6.

He eventually went up 10-9 with the help of a backhand passing shot and an errant shot into the net by Nadal brought the entertainment to an end — for now.

It led to the unusual situation of both players leaving the court to a huge ovation — and applauding the fans in return — but without there being a clear winner or loser.

  1. FYI

    (a) The Championships is an outdoor daytime event. Therefore, in good weather, the roof will only be used if it is too dark to play on without it.

    (c) . . .
Best efforts will be made to start play each day with the roof open. However, 45 minutes before the start of each day’s play, the Referee will decide if the first match will start with the roof open or closed.
    . . .
    [in rain]
If the projected interruption is sufficiently brief, as determined by the Referee, the normal covers will be used and play then continued with the roof open.

  2. Rafa’s press conference is up on the Wimbledon youtube.

One thing stood out to me; he said “I am proud of myself”. So good to hear this from him.

We are proud of you too, Rafa.

  3. Hello! Thanks everyone for sharing in the Rafa Wimbledon 2018 experience. Our champ almost made it, but it was not to be this time. He will certainly be back next year ‘fighting for the important things.’

I’m sure Rafa will take a lot of positives from his run in this tournament. Good luck moving forward with the rest of the season Rafa. Thanks for the great memories, always my champion!

  4. If does not exist for rafa and thats why he is such a champion…….roger got one oppnent like rafa got 4 times in faces of rosol darcis kyrigos and brown ..godd servers and he lost the match ….rafa is not just one court player he is greatest tennis player ever played in open era along with roger and more….and time and again he proves it…rafa came short of matches behind him of grass clurt tournament….so he did fantasticlly well…and the forehand down the line is becoming so so vicious and rafa moment is reminding the old himself….vamos…well done rafa and team….

  5. Rafa backhand is improved so much which was his weak part ..he always tries to improve …i hope rafa do the work on serve a little bit…..free points is so needed in tough moments……

  6. Rafa, thank you for making Wimbledon extra special this year for your fans and the spectators , feel privileged to have you come to England , have a great and safe journey back to your beloved Majorca and take a well earned rest ready to come back strong in your next tournament. Congratulations to Kerber Wimbledon champ , and good luck tomorrow to Kevin , Jamie Murray/Victoria Azarenka.

    • Well Maria you got your wish. You dont have to put up with another Serena and Roger double this year. Congrats to Kerber and the best of luck to Kevin for tomorrow. With Rafa out, it would be good to see a new champion as we have in the ladies.

      • Not quite Susie, if I knew Novak would be in the final I would rather he was up against Roger as I think out of him and Kevin he would have more chance to beat Novak , but Rafas’s out so I don’t really care now , I will only be watching the mixed doubles with Murray and hope I can celebrate Kev’s win.

      • You never know – kevin took out roger so may be able to take out that rat Novak. But he will be very tired I fear

    • Yes. Thank you, Rafa, for treating us to such fantastic grass court tennis. So proud of the way you played, even without warm-up tournaments.

      Believe, Rafa.

  7. Rafa you played superbly i am so so happy to see u playing this way…..best luck for next tournament a d rest well…..u always gave ur best no matter what…it was decided in just few point …..the serve is always a little on disadvantage side for rafa ….but rafa is the best …..you will win so many more grandslams and wimbeldon for sure….take care rest well .. be healthy

  8. Congratulations to Angelique Kerber who one the final against Serena, 6-3, 6-3. Serena has work to do too.

  9. You’re right mjus, we’ll never know if Rafa would have won with the roof open, but at least he should have been given the chance to play in the open air. Rafa was always playing catch up in the final set and psychologically, that is a disadvantage, but yes he squandered his chances with so many break points. Oh, what could have been….Never mind, he will regroup and he lives to fight another day in the US sunshine.
Come on Kevin, you said that Rafa was your inspiration in recent years, so make all that fist pumping count for something! How i’d love to see you lift that trophy!

    • I totally agree about playing catch-up. The fifth set reminded me of the Müller match last year. Having to repeatedly hold serve to stay in the match is tough. Novak had more break points (overalll match) than Rafa, but they converted 4 each. Exactly the same number of winners and unforced errors as well (73-42) and Novak won just 4 more points, so until the last game they were equal. It’s unfortunate for Rafa, but that’s how it goes sometimes and I don’t think he did much wrong today.

  10. First of all congratulations to novak. We have to give novak credit for keeping his composure in the fifht set when facing breakpoints. Novak is back to his old level which is only good for the atp. When it comes to rafa i thought overall he played well but he made mistakes.

    – he squanderd three setpoints in the tiebreak of the third set
    – Nadal had chances in the fifth. But on these points he was hestitant and played passive and defensive.and did not get the point but instead waiting for novak to make a mistake
    – He used not much the forehand down the line he kept playing to novak backhand which i just dont understand
    – his returns were not good in my opinion. He repeatly kept down the line side of the court open and every time novak was in trouble he served down the line.

Nadal has homework to do. Somebody in his camp should tell him that he can not defeat novak like this on other surfaces maybe only on clay He needs to change his strategy. This was nadal best chance of winning wimbeldon if he had beaten novak he would have won tomorrow.

Its very hard for me to see him winning here next year. I gave him more chance in Paris and New York.

I dont want to blame the roof. we dont know if nadal would have won in a open roof. When it comes to tomorrow i am going to root for kevin anderson. what a story it would be if he wins wimbeldon. You can almost compare his maybe win with that of ivanisevic in 2001

    • Hi mjus,

I would like to make the distinction that I am not blaming the roof for Rafa’s defeat, I am blaming it for Novak’s advantage. If Rafa had lost with the roof open, that would be a different story.

Thank you for your analysis, which is very informative and detailed. I agree that he looked hesitant in some points, and that will have cost him.

There was only so long he could hold on in the serve-out. As soon as he missed the 15-40 opportunities, I thought it was over.

      Best wishes

    • Correct Don’t know if Rafa would of won w/roof open, we will never know who is the TRUE winner of this match! Nole wanted the roof closed, now has to defend that, SAD. Rafa stated wanted Roof open. Nole has to use whatever he can against a True Sportsman like RAFA & why Rafa
gets the Luv & Respect & Nole DOES’NT

      • Can anyone tell me why they have to listen to Novak, but not to Rafa about roof open or closed?????

    • Just to reply to the last part of your comment, mjus. I think Rafa should be encouraged by the way he changed up his game and took risks after the first set. He played many great drop shots, mixed up the pace and tried to go after Novak’s second serve. I like the way he came out of the blocks quickly at the start of the match today, playing much more aggressively. Of course there are some areas to work on, like his first serve but Rafa said he is very proud of his performance and so am I. We must remember that Rafa never played any warm up tournaments and still made it to the semis, so don’t write him off just yet. He’s closer than he ever has been since 2011.

  11. I am actually quite surprised that Djokovic didn’t let the roof open. It’s not sporting. He had an advantage on a technicality (although Henman said that “rule” wasn’t even enforceable, it was at the director’s discretion). He took an advantage, instead of the true fight. I’m really disappointed in his character. What price winning, Novak? If you’re going to be the villain, at least have the courage to declare it, instead of veil it. We see you.

    • Please someone explain: How come was it Djoko’s decision to make about the roof being open or closed? – I don’t get it… 🙄

      • I think it’s this: Wimbledon’s default position (not a rule, the tournament referee can override it) is that the match continues under the same conditions as it started, unless both players wish otherwise. I have no doubt Rafa would have wanted the roof open. We don’t know if Djokovic actually said he wanted it closed, or whether he stated no preference. Just trying to be objective about it.

      • Hi Jas UK , the commentator’s did say that one player wanted it open and one wanted it closed, and Boris let out Novak wanted it closed

      • Yes Boris said it twice in fact. Once in the pre-match talks and once whilst commentating. Cant believe that Wimbledon put that tweet on. It was a sunny day at 1pm you duffers and you could have let the air in then. Quite right that they got abuse immediately.

      • Thx. for explaning you all 😊👍🏻 – Still think it was unfair and pointless closing the roof though 🤨👎🏻

        VAMOS RAFA 🎾💪🏼😍
        KING OF TENNIS! 😘🥇👑

  12. So it can be an indoor tournament whenever they want, right? Cool; next year after the delay, they can switch to a clay court for the final two sets.

    Outrageous.

    • The powers that be at Wimbledon should be thoroughly ashamed. Today is anothet day, a bright sunny day and the roof should have been open. Furthermore, there was a lot on the line for both men at this crucial stage of the tournament, so they should have been allowed to play in natural outdoor conditions. Fir Wimbledon to post that tweet was thoughtless and insensitive. This issue shouldn’t be swept under the carpet and I hope that pressure from whatever quarter should force them abolish this silly, pointless rule.

      • Tim Henman explained that it wasn’t even a rule; it was a convention to have the match continue under the same conditions it started. A convention they logically flout all the time, whenever they close-open the roof for rain.

So as I understand it, the director could have chosen not to give Novak the power to decide.

  13. Sad for Rafa on his loss. I hope he gets a well-deserved rest. He can check his calendar to decide what’s next and he has time to work on things he needs to improve on. Wishing him great things for the rest of the season. That this was such a close match it makes the loss so much more painful. Rafa will keep on ROCKING.

    RAFAMAZING ROCKS

  14. I hope Rafa isn’t too upset. It was a great match (Rafa gave the tournament two classic matches this year alone) and very close. Rafa has played so well on grass this year and proved all those who said he couldn’t have any success on it anymore, wrong. He adapted his game, stepping in to return and playing more at the net. His play was lovely to watch and I hope to see him try some of those things on hard courts. There is no shame in losing in a slam semi-final to a player like Djokovic in a match lasting over five hours. He didn’t get match point and then squander it like Fed. It’s a shame he didn’t make the final, but Rafa now has a big lead in the rankings and Race to London. He should be proud of his achievements at Wimbledon and take some well-earned rest.

You were amazing on the grass Rafa, your brilliant play and fighting spirit is as good or better than ever – thank you!

    • I agree with your positive analysis, and of course this progress will be great for Rafa’s confidence. He gave us so much fantastic tennis; it can *never* be doubted that he is a stellar all-court player.

But. He gave so much… and the tournament thanked him by changing the conditions to benefit his opponent at the last minute.

      • Horrible. Great match for Rafa, but I’m over with Wimbledon. I will never watch a Wimbledon match again (apart Rafa ones, of course). This is a scandal.

      • Totally agree with you. Very unfair unfortunately. And he will be upset, very upset. That was his best chance to win his 3rd Wimbledon and he blow it with help of Brits too. So happy than England loose in World cup tho🤣

  15. Wimbledon Twitter put up a Tweet with the roof opening, saying:

    “Letting the fresh air in…

Well, the sun is out after all”

The comments under it were swift and angry. They have since removed the tweet.

    • One of those comments (not vulgar, of course) was mine. They got submerged by outraged fans replies. This will remain.

    • …….THEM ! UTTERLY PATHETIC AND SHAMEFUL WITNESSING TWO WEEKS OF THEIR DESPICABLE POOR BIAS DECISIONS!!!!!! WHAT IS SAD TO HEAR IS THE COMMENTATORS KNOW BETTER , YET THEY GO ALONG WITH ALL THE BS……HUGE MASSIVE SHAME! DIRECTOR OF WIMBLEDON MUST BOW DOWN ON HIS KNEES ALONG WITH THE OTHERS AND THEY MUST KISS RAFA’S PRECIOUS FEET THAT HE GRACED THEM WITH HIS ATTENDANCE……
PLEASE TENNIS FANS SPEAK UP, WRITE UP AND TAKE TIME AND EFFORT TO ADVOCATE FOR ALL PLAYERS……. ANDERSON SEMI , GREAT SOLID PLAY, WAS NOT COVERED FAIRLY AT ALL……RIDICULOUS HOW FOR SOME REASON ISNER WAS CHOSEN TO BE THE FOCAL POINT OF THE MATCH…. LOOSER ANNOUNCERS KEPT THE BIAS UP PRETTY MUCH ALL THE MATCH TILL LAST FEW BALLS…….ISNER IMHO, IS NOT AND WAS NOT HALF AS GOOD AS OTHER TOP PLAYERS YET RECEIVES FRONT STAGE…….BS HAS GOT TO STOP…….
      .

  16. Chin up guys, Rafa played well . These kind of matches can go either way.I m proud of the way Rafa played n he showed once again that why he is the greatest competitor of this sport. Novak didn’t celebrated much because he too knows it was about being lucky . Congratulations to Djokovic.
Rafa you gave your very best. After witnessing such kind of effort , you feel honoured more than anything. Winning n loosing is a part of the game.
    Vamos for ever

    • I agree that he played well. I am happy that he has realised that he can go deep at Wimbledon without a warm-up tournament. I hope that he will correct the areas he needs to improve for a return this year.

But. This defeat is really hard to swallow. The schedule delay; which was an equal problem for both player. And the roof; which was obviously a problem for Rafa.

They basically handed Djokovic the trophy when they gave him the power to decide over whether they were playing an indoor or outdoor tournament. If Rafa had lost to him with an open roof, I’d still be upset. But now, I feel enraged.

    • Very true, Navdeep. I follow you! 😌👍🏻 Just very disappointed right now. – Ohh darn! 😥
It was such a close match… Just wanted it to be Rafa’s soo bad 😘

Win or loose – always with Champ Rafa! ❤️

  18. 15-40 twice and the set point in the 3rd set makes it hurt more. But if Rafa plays like this he has a good shot at the US Open.

  19. Ugh this is just terrible. Rafa must be devastated, I feel so bad for him.

Our champ gave it his all, and really, all I wanted was him to win the 4th set, which he did.

Hold your head up high Rafa! Now I really hope Kevin Anderson can keep up the good work tomorrow:)

  20. Enjoy your cousin’s wedding Susie, hopefully it will take your mind off today’s outcome

    • Im still very disappointed and it will be a while till I get over this. I just wish it had been delpo he was playing today and not novak. Id have wished Delpo all the luck in the world for tomorrow. But thanks Maria.

  21. Now Rafa will never believe that he can beat Djokovic. He had so many chances – so many. In his last service game I just felt that this is the end my Rafa’s body language. So only watched first 2 balls and then saw the alert.
Very disappointed. Djokovic is certainly not the better player. Rafa is just psyched by him and until he beats him hollow or in a match like this it’ll be difficult.
For me winning this match was more important than even the title. Now Djokovic will be on top again.
Sorry to sound so negative and gloomy but that’s how I’m feeling.

    • I understand your feelings. Rafa will be so frustrated with himself. He had chances and he didn’t take them. Djoker played amazingly, and Rafa did too; just not on the crucial points. I just… There’s something about Rafa losing to Djoker that I never felt with Roger.

      • Me too,Alex…..Rafa is better player than Djokovic…and I am so frustrated with Rafa actually that he can’t beat him in close matches…..Its damaging for his disbelief against Novak and I think uncle Tony has share in that

    • BULL…..OF COURSE RAFA KNOWS HE CAN TAKE ANY PLAYER TO THE CLEANERS….VAMOS SWEETHEART…..KEEP GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) DO NOT READ ANY POST MATCH BS….AND PAY ZERO ATTENTION TO WHAT IS BEING SAID…..BECAUSE YOU WERE AND YOU ARE THE STRONGEST TENNIS PLAYER ON ALL SURFACES…………………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) YOU ARE THE CHAMPION OF IMPROVING ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR BEAUTIFUL TENNIS AND KEEP GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) WE LOVE YOU SWEETHEART AND SENDING LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL WISHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) HAVE A GREAT TIME AND KEEP SMILING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

  22. So gutted for you Rafa, you are a beautiful soul and deserved to be in the final, I hope you are so proud of how far you got at Wimbledon this year but I fear that will make the hurt even more unbearable. What makes this worst for me is who he lost to, I don’t dislike many people but he is top of my list. Good luck Kevin tomorrow and I hate to say this but Novak’s back.

    • Oh Maria – i agree with all that you say. I feel sick for Rafa – whats worse is he was healthy. No justice

      • I know Susie, but I guess grass isn’t his best surface , but with all the new generation and now Novak nipping at his heels Rafa and Roger won’t be as dominant now. My worry as you have said he’s healthy so ho wills feel about losing. My other fear is he’s 32 and won’t get married or have children until he retires , which makes me wonder if that will come earlier than expected, let’s hope not.

  23. SUPERB, WELL PLAYED RAFA. THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL MATCH.

    LOVE YOU ALWAYS. 💙💖💟💜💛💛💓❤💙💖🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

PLEASE RELAX AND GET YOUR MUCH NEEDED REST.

  24. Rafa. What can we say. You had your chances; you didn’t take them. We are gutted for you. Novak was the better player in the end, but you deserved this so much. I’m just…heartbroken.

Somewhere in a parallel universe, you won this. I want to live there.
