PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal defeats Kevin Anderson to win US Open

World number one Rafael Nadal has beaten Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to win the 2017 US Open. It’s Rafa’s 3rd title in the event and his 16th major tournament triumph overall, which is astonishing.

Throughout the game, Rafa had seven aces and 23 unforced errors. He definitely showed he was the No. 1 ranked men’s tennis player in the world. He broke Anderson’s serve twice in the first set, the 7th and 9th games to win it 6-3. He continued in the same style in the next two sets – unstoppable. Our champ lost just 15 points on serve in the entire match, did not face a break point and won all 16 points he finished at the net. Wow!

It is a very special two weeks for me, but first I want to say congratulations to Kevin who has come back better than ever after some tough injuries. You are a great example to all the players on tour.

It’s just unbelievable what happened this year. After a couple of years with some troubles, injuries, sometimes playing not good – since the beginning of the season it has been very, very emotional. To close the Grand Slam year with a win in New York, brings me to a higher energy because the crowd is unbelievable here.

On Uncle Toni: I can’t thank him enough for all the things he did for me. Probably without him I would never be playing tennis and it’s great I had somebody like him pushing me all the time.

  1. Vamos vamos vamos Rafa! Loved every minute of coverage on Eurosport. But I never wanted it to end! Apart that is from listening to Pat Cash who basically said might have been a different outcome if the all of the big 4 were playing. Rafa earned this trophy and rightfully and is the number 1 player in the world. GOAT! People had Rafa written off last year (so where is J Beer now)?! Lol! So happy for Rafa.

    • Pat Cash doesn’t have RIGH to talk about Rafa .He is so inferior to him. He never like Rafa, but who cares what mediocre tennis player wants to say about one of the best ever

    • Is that the commenter who said for 3 years a new coach was needed? I think he was right! Look at what happened with Moya on board.

    • Regarding Pat Cash, there may be a point in what he says. Similarly one can argue that some of Federer’s major wins in 03-07 might have had another outcome in case the other Big Three would have been mature players at the time (they were hardly 20-21 years old in 07 and Fed had no real great competition in his age group). And what about all the majors that Rafa missed due to injury?? Even if the US Open 17 is considered Rafa’s easy slam – then I say he had it coming, finally. Roger has had more than a handful of these easy ones!! And by the way, nobody argued about the quality of DelPo when he beat Rafa, Djoko at the Olympics and lost to Murray there. And neither when he took out Fed here. But when Rafa rolled him, it was too easy? Nadal played fantastic tennis. There is not much more to wish, just maybe that Moya should have been on board earlier and should be there more often. Vamos!

    • J Beer? He’s probably with Jason spewing their hate-filled rhetoric on some other blog. AND GOOD RIDDANCE.

      HAPPY SWEET 16 RAFA

  6. Congratulatins on winning the USOPEN title and 16th GS title and 2nd GS title in this year and last GS title with Uncle Toni ! We are so so proud of Rafa ! Thank you for your outstanding come back to USOPEN 2017 which I watched on the spot . We hope this year will be the begining of Rafa’s brilliant second career.

  7. Well done Rafa, you deserved this win, so happy for you as are all your fans.
I agree with Mary re Eurosport someone should tell Mats Wilander to stop talking when players are PLAYING. He does it every match he comments on – the spectators are told to be quiet when games are being played so why not him!!! Infuriating to say the least.

Anyway, that said Rafa go back to your beloved Manacor and relax, relax, relax. You have earned it well and truly

    • Hi Connie, Mat Wilander is a pro Rafa. He adores Rafa much than Roger if you’ve noticed it. Commentators comments are not heard around the stadium. It’s only around their cubicle. Mat is just so excited of Rafa’s serve and return. In some occasions every time they invite Rafa on their podium Mat Wilander just stares at Rafa in astonishment. Well am truly so very happy for our champ Rafa.

      • Yes..I noticed that too.
Last time..he was just staring at him… at his
        Briallance ..i’m sure..
        Always saying positive
        comments..
Matts is just in awe of
        Rafa’s presence as a
        great athlete.

      • Hi Melly, know that his comments are not heard on court but there are milling of fans around the world who want quiet when players are playing the points and as I pointed out the curtside spectators are told or asked to be quiet. So that is my point and yes, John McEnroe does the same too. Sometimes I turn the mute button to stop their sometimes useless drivel when they talk about their own experiences of the past!

      • Johnny Mac indeed also does that. And he is not shy to talk about himself. During the Rafa-Rublev match he completely ignored the rallies at some point and started talking about how Borg said he never got tired and how Connors worked so hard etc etc. Listen John, we know you are a tennis legend, but leave that stuff for interviews or documentaries, will ya?

  8. Just awesome!!!! What a comeback year. Best wishes to continue throughout the rest of the year. Love ya Rafa!!!!

  9. Congratulation! An excellent match again. Take rest and fighting for other coming big titles, especially WTF. Keep ATP No1 ranking as long as possible 🙂
Only 3 GS left to reach Roger. Only U can do it. Vamos, Rafa 🙂

  10. So thrilled for Rafa, his team and family. I’ve never seen Rafa play better on hard court. What a lovely tribute Rafa gave to his Uncle Toni. How fantastic ihe must feel to see his nephew win the last GS of the season on his last year on tour as coach. An amazing, loyal partnership.

  11. Felicidades Rafa un gran partido y un mereccido premio.

I fully agree that Rafa should have won the AO 20 minutes of physio because Federer’s legs were “a little tired” is out of order, and had anyone else done we would have heard a lot more from the mainstream media but because it was Federer, the golden boy everyone was mutis

    • Yes, the loss at the AO was very painful for Rafa, but he showed true grit and determination to put it behind him to win two GS. With the form he is in, it will be difficult to stop Rafa at the AO next year. Maybe he can get his own back and beat Fed there. That would be poetic justice and it’ll be interesting to see if Fed ducks the French Open again.

      • Ducks? I think it just doesn’t make sense for him to play. For his age, he is scheduling smartly.

I hope Rafa shaves off at least two of the tournaments he has on his post US Open schedule. I want him super fresh for AO 2018.

        HAPPY SWEET 16 RAFA

  12. No words rafa, incredible, such an inspiration, keep going ,we have miles to go,and a big vaaaaaaamossss
