Rafael Nadal will be the new world number one from next Monday

Rafael Nadal will replace Andy Murray as the new world No. 1 next Monday (21 August) as Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati citing a back problem.

Our champ missed out on an opportunity to become No. 1 in Montreal when he was beaten by Denis Shapovalov.

Rafa, who has spent 141 weeks at No. 1 in his career, last held the ranking in 2014.

  1. Felicidades Rafa. Te lo mereces. Ojala fueras un poquito mas carismatico con tus fans y el public que siempre te ha apoyado. Que diferencia entre tu y Roger. Felicidades.

    Tus fans pueden decir misa.

  2. We know that Rafa does not like to become number one due to others’ injuries, but we don’t know what would have happened if Roger did not withdraw. His play last week was very average. Roger may well end the year as one, but Rafa played well on hard courts with finals in AO and Miami. He then devastated everyone who played during the clay season. He is leading the ATP in match wins. Now we need to see how he plays at the Open. I did just see that Roger will be number three next week. He may be five points behind Andy heading into the Open. That could prove interesting.

  3. Congrats Rafa! No one deserves this more than you do. You came back from a horrible injury and fought all season long without skipping anything to optimise your chances. You’ve given your fans a brilliant year with so many brilliant matches to watch – incredible!!!!

  4. I just saw this is on the ATP site and had a ittle excitement quiver when I read the headline… I’m sorry to hear about Roger, but I think Rafa’s successes in the first half of the year mean he deserves this, even if it’s only for a week or two – #1 is always temporary. So many others injured, or dropping down the rankings, but Rafa survives and progresses. I hope it gives him extra self-belief rather than added pressure and most of all that he stays healthy. Yes a hard-court win would be very nice too. Very happy and proud of Rafa right now!

  7. Wow, to me Rafa is always #1 no matter what the ranking. But now it’s official. How about that. Rafa’s stellar 2017 year continues. He always shines no matter what the adversity or obstacle. So thrilled for you.

Congrats to you Rafa. You are so deserving. Can’t believe how hard you were on yourself in Montreal. Way too hard, perhaps, but you are such an incredible champion. ,

Bravo, Rafa. You never cease to amaze me and all your fans!

  8. So much deserved – congrats champ 🥇😘

    RAFA ROCKS #1

    • Phyrric victory? Not at all. He has accomplished in this clay season what no other person has. And, he can boast [not that he would] that there is a Pista Rafa Nadal.

      RAFA ROCKS 150%

      • I would agree if a few very significant other things had not happened. Such as Fed winning the two other majors, beating Rafa three times and Rafa losing matches he absolutely should have won since. The ranking system is an ugly beast at times. Fed deserves the no. 1 spot more now, but at the same time is very evident that he only reigns because Djokovic checked out.

      • How can you say Fed reigns? RAFA is now KING of the World of tennis in singles. I don’t care what Roger won. Yes, Rafa lost some. Yes, he lost where he should have won. And he is still number UNO. You’re gonna give yourself an ulcer. Rafa will be kind to you for the remainder of the 2017 season.🤗

        RAFA ROCKS WORLD #1

      • Margo, you really lack any vision. 2017 sp far will go down as Roger Federer’s year. 2 majors is double of 1 major. Rafa’s success – clay only – will unfortunately go down as a foot note; w minutes in the hour long documentary. The only thing Rafa can do is win the US Open and I dont think it will happen, second week is gonna be tough even. This spell at no. 1 will be a very short one.

      • As a Rafan I have a different viewpoint. Rafa stands alone in his accomplishments despite a lengthy list of injuries; records broken, La Décima, Pista Rafa Nadal, slams [on all surfaces], masters. With his record, I fail to find someone who can stand alongside him.

        RAFA ROCKS #1
