Rafael Nadal has added former French Open champion and fellow Spaniard Carlos Moya to his coaching team. Moya will join Toni Nadal and Francis Roig in working with our champ.

Rafa:

I am very excited to announce that Carlos will join my team immediately and will be working together with Toni and Francis Roig. To have someone like Carlos who is not only a friend but also a very important person in my career, is something special. He will be next to me on my practice and competition. At the same time he will also join the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar working with Toni and the rest of the technical team.

 Carlos Moya:

Toni called me while I was at the IPTL competition. It was great to receive that call. To be able to help Rafa is something special for me and I am sure that, together with Toni, Francis and the rest of the team we have a great common project.

Rafa is a special player and, above all, a great person. I have a lot of trust and confidence that he will be able to continue winning important titles. At the same time, the academy is an important challenge in an already very professional structure with great professionals that do an excellent work.

Toni Nadal:

When I knew Carlos had stopped with Raonic I called him. Carlos has always been a special person for us. He was always there to help us. We think it is the right moment to have him join our team.

  1. Yes Margo, I intend to jump up and down wave my good arm – the other will still be in a sling – whenever Rafa plays one of his special shots, of which he has quite a repetoire when he is well and confident as we hope he will be. He certainly looked that way today against Berdych.

    • So glad to hear you will at least get to do that. Looks as if you are on the mend.
I was listening to David Law and Katherine Whitaker commentating on Rafa. Most of what they said has been covered here by fans so I will paraphrase their comments.
Moyà’s integration into the team “should be seamless.” First and foremost they were thrilled that Rafa has added a new voice to his team. Their thinking is, because of friendship and trust, Rafa most likely will be predisposed to listen to Moyà vs someone from the outside. They mentioned the great outcome of the Moyà-Raonic partnership and felt it had more to do with the relationship itself. Whatever the future holds, Rafa can never say he didn’t try something new. They hoped that adding Moyà was done in a most respectful way but that Toni would allow Carlos to do what he feels needs to be done.

As for me, there is the possibility that it was Toni who suggested Moyà as a team member. I can’t wait for part two of Rafa’s bio.

  2. Hello Beverly, so glad you managed to see some of the match, yes it’s very easy to get a bit carried away when Rafa comes out on the court with this form, but I guess we have to be realistic but it does look very promising. Enjoy today’s match if you are watching it .

  3. Hello Beverly, I’m so sorry to hear about your fall , I wish you a speedy recovery, put your feet up and rest that shoulder and I so hope you can find some footage of the match. Rafa in the first set played brilliantly, the commentator’s couldn’t praise him enough , He played and looked great , sporting a very nice tan , the break has done him good.Raonic will be tough to beat but if Rafa played like he did today he should come out on top , I to will be crossing my fingers ,I would love to see a Rafa / Murray final and it would give us an idea of where Rafas game is at. Andy’s had a great year and is in line for a knighhood which I will be happy to see but my heart lies with Rafa always and I’m hoping 2017 will be his year. Hope you manage to see some of his next match and take care.

    • Hello Maria, yes was able to see highlights of Rafa’s match on a video on my computer. Rafa looked confident and in control. I also saw his post match interview and he said he did not feel under pressure, just wanted to play well and enjoy. As long as he stays injury free I see no reason why he can;t have a good 2017.He has just returned from some months away from competition so we can’t expect him to suddenly win every match he plays but I feel he is on the right track.

  4. The National posted a short clip of Rafa playing football tennis with fan Omar Abdulrahman who said he wanted to teach Rafa something about tennis the other day. Watching Rafa having fun on court is always a pleasure.

  5. Be still my heart!!! Great news!!!!!
According to reporter Ahmed Rizvi, Rafa, speaking to the media at the Godiva Café (yummy) in The Galleria, “My idea is to stay here for a few more years and I feel enough motivation to be here. I believe that I can compete for important things for the next three years.”
He is not ready to quit fighting. I hope his body gives him the opportunity to do just that.

    YES YOU ROCK RAFA

    • RAFA IS NOT FINISHED.
I am with you Rafa, nothing beats a rollercoaster ride.
You beat Raonic last year so you can do it again.
EVERYONE who said Rafa is finished has probably had a lobotomy.

  7. “Abu-Dhabi-Doo”! Rafa was firing on all cylinders , 6-0, 6-4. If this is a taster of what’s to come in 2017 Rafa fans are going to be very happy. It looks like just having Carlos Moya in his coaching team has made his confidence soar. It might only be an exhibition match but if Rafa carries on playing like this, , the other players better sit up and take notice as in 2017 Rafa is going to be no walk in the park.So happy for you Rafa , good luck tomorrow against Raonic.

  10. Beverly, I so hope you stayed up to watch this or are recording it , you are in for a real treat . WOW ! WOW! WOW!

    • Hello Maria, I would normally stay up all night to see Rafa play but had a very nasty fall recently and fractured my shoulder and get tired very easily struggling around with my arm in a sling . However I got up early this morning and went straight to my computer and read the great news. This is a confidence booster for Rafa . I hope to be able to view a video of some of the match on my computer today. Raonic will be a tough competitor in the next match but I am keeping my fingers crossed .

  11. Get your popcorn ready, Rafa fans. Rafa will be on court in about ten minutes.

    • Margo I’m in California and it isn’t on the tennis Channel or ESPN or ESPN2… Is this the one we have to watch on the scoreboard? Stupid tennis Channel has rewind on it!

      • Tennis Channel is a screw-up. I used to have a subscription but I can’t recall why many, if not all, tennis tournaments are not televised in the US.
I myself was looking to find where Mubadala would be televised, either live or steam. USA was not on the list.
Sorry I can’t offer more info.

        RAFA ROCKS

      • I have a subscription for Tennis Everywhere (I’m in Boston), and I was able to watch the match on my iPhone.

  12. Rafa is due to play at 2.30 UK time , can’t wait feels like he’s been away forever .Have my fingers crossed for a great win against Thomas Berdych 🇪🇸🇪🇸
