Rafa Roundup: This is not the end!

Rafael Nadal King of Clay French Open Roland Garros

“We took the risks yesterday. To have won the tournament I would have had to play five more matches and the doctor told me that was 100 per cent impossible.

Nadal, wearing a wrist brace, said the injury first flared up during his quarter-final match in Madrid against Joao Sousa earlier this month, after which he underwent treatment in Barcelona before heading to Rome, where he lost in the quarter-finals to Novak Djokovic.

Having played on anti-inflammatories in Italy, Nadal said the pain began to return prior to his departure for Paris. “When I arrived here, every day is worse,” Nadal said. “I cannot play with my forehand. That’s the real thing.”

By withdrawing from Roland-Garros, Nadal hopes to avoid surgery to his wrist.

For now, the French Open and the popular Spaniard’s millions of admirers will hope he has another stab at the record next year. He certainly believes he will.

Now is a tough moment, but is not the end. I feel myself with the right motivation and the right energy to be back in Roland Garros the next couple of years, and I really hope to keep having my chances in the future.”

Nadal’s uncle and coach Toni lamented the unfortunate timing of the injury but is hoping his charge will be ready to compete again soon.

“It’s part of the sport. But yes, this setback has come at the worst moment,” said Toni.

“It’s a pity because Rafael was starting to get back to a good level, feeling competitive and this is the most important tournament of the year for us. Now, the most important thing is for him to recuperate completely and when he’s back, we can get to where we are right now.”

  1. Novak has had an easy ride to the final, Rafa was the only one who could stopped him and once he retired it was a breeze for Novak. Even if Novak takes the trophy this year , the shine gone off it as he wanted to be the one who ended Rafa’s reign (boo hoo never mind). I’m am so glad that people have criticised him with his antics with the ball boys . It’s so transparent and cringe worthy .You can’t buy love Novak. And every where he goes he signs with a heart so know place is special really. Rafa has won there 9 times and not once has he felt the need to try anything like this to get the crowd on his side. I hope the crowd aren’t fooled by it and they all get behind Andy on Sunday. Your times up Novak take your mini mouse shoes and head back to Monte Carlo and have a slap up meal in your new Vegan restaurant.

  2. I hope andy takes novak down on sunday. I really dont want him to touch rafa’s trophy

    VAMOS 🎾💪💖👑

  7. Thanks Teresa , it probably amuses you as your thinking they would have to pay most people to go and watch Novak . And to be honest who would want to take the risk of being hit by one of his flying rackets.

    • ITV4 announced today the 10 Euro offer encouraging people to even fly over if they can:)) I don’t know why this amuses me so much – but it does…
The Rafa quote is from a recent Spanish documentary (translated) ‘Informe Robinson’. You can get it on youtube but is in Spanish.

  8. Dr Who there’s really not much to say after Rafa pulled out of the FO. I was hoping you with your wise predictions could tell us when Rafa would be back on the tennis circuit. I think he should wait and make a comeback at the US Open if all is well. One bit of good news in a list of 100 most top athletes, Rafa came in 10th .It was based on earnings from tournament and sponsors, amount of followers on Facebook and Twitter and amount of times their name’s were googled. Roger came in 5th and Novak 16th. If they had added likeability factor Rafa would have been No 1 and Novak not in the top 100 and that’s being very generous.Hmmmmmm……..

    • That’s great news. Not even the Serb’s record breaking $100 million could help him in the ratings. Rafa is loved for being Rafa.

      RAFA ROCKS

  9. 2 things that made me laugh today:)))

    1. You can get into Roland Garros for 10 Euro
    2. Rafa talking about his underpants:

Robinson: Have you changed the brand of underpants because the other went in…?
Rafa: No, no! The truth is that this is a craze that, whichever underpants I wear, but… we are not going to fix it. It is something that, especially when I play tennis, I cannot solve and I have been doing it since I was, I think, 6, 7 or 8 years old.
    Robinson: Really?
    Rafa: Yes, yes.

    • I am very concerned about this underwear statement. I read an interview where he stated he pulls at his underwear only when he plays tennis. Here he says “especially” when he plays tennis. I read anything I can find on Rafa in English, French or Spanish and sometimes the same interview is different in another language. Was this a video you saw and what language was Rafa talking? Thanks

      • Hi Margo, it’s in Spanish as I mentioned in an earlier reply. ‘Informe Robinson’ on you tube. A brilliant documentary made recently. I wouldn’t be too concerned Rafa is laughing his head off. You only have to look at a YouTube videos of Rafa as a child to see he he had exactly the same tics – right shoulder – left shoulder – ear – ear – nose with intermittent tugs at his pants. Many reporters over the years (not that you can trust a word they say!) have reported seeing him do things off court. You can see this simply in his many facial pulls and twitches which are probably part and parcel of the same nervous disposition.

  10. Where is my precious Maria?

Been long since I read anything from her…….Hmmmmmmmmmmm….

    But, as always, we’ll see.

  11. I’d booked some time off work in the hope of seeing him at Queens. Feel really miserable now:(
I watched the extended retirement interview. Between speaking with the British and Spanish press he looks completely distraught barely managing to hold back tears. The Spanish press gave him a bit of a drilling (good!) about playing with anaesthetics and in Rome. He finished the interview pretty abruptly got up and walked out.

    • Where have you found the full version of that press conference? Only found parts of it on youtube…not sure if I can bear to watch it but somehow I need to :(. Miss him every day more and more, it feels so sad. Don’t know how to deal with it this time.

      • Hi Fedallica, if you go to ‘Rafa Nadal King of Tennis’ on the web you should be able to follow the link to it. There is a list of dates at the base – click into the latest dates and you should see the video links. It really is not nice to watch though – It shows the reality of the situation.

      • Teresa, thank you so much! I found the full lenght-press conference now. You were right…:(

  12. I was thrilled to learn of Rafa’s decision to pull out of the Queen’s Club Championship; to have done otherwise would have been folly. His injury involves the sheath and tendon. It will take time, more than a matter of a few weeks to heal. He also needs to forget about Wimbledon. And truth be told, it would be surprising if he is completely healed by the time of the Olympics. I just hope he does as Dr. Cotorro, who has treated Rafa since his teens, suggested; play limited tournaments and do it gradually. Rafa has done the exact opposite.
Many sports commentators have asked Uncle Toni about Rafa seeing a psychologist. Uncle Toni’s response was, “If he did, I would not tell you.” Reading so many different opinions here I have to remind myself that like any celebrity, the Rafa camp divulges only what they want the public to know. And it’s usually in increments. I will wait in anticipation for any news from Rafa or his camp. I hope he lets his fans know how his wrist is healing and eventually what his plans are for the rest of 2016.

    RAFA ROCKS

  13. seeing rafa last match, his forehand flow and his comments in press i guess and hope the injury is not critical and he gets recovered speedily

    regarding rafa style of play

with rafael nadal doubts may be there but be sure so is the certainty …the grind is the game big fullstop

the thing that made nadal the nadal, made him to win the most toughest grandslam 9 times.. just love ur every bit of game and i am sure u will continue and will find another gear when u return

why all questions hovering around rafa and roger about retirement……..let them play freely they are comfortable, loving this game and enjoying hence they are playing.

    rafa play many more years

    get well soon

    vamos rafa
