“They (Rafa’s parents) are not scared about saying to me, ‘You are doing that badly, you are not right with that,’ ” he said. “Sometimes the teams around the big stars of sport … are scared to say things to the star, to the player. That didn’t happen with me, and that helps. “…Sometimes I am not the most organized person in the world, and my mom is not happy. And it’s good. They treat me the same as my sister. That’s important.” “Today I (pay) 100 percent attention on the court, every time, every practice, every match. But at the same time, I didn’t lose anything in my life.”

Doubles play kicked off on Friday in Indian Wells as World No. 3 Rafael Nadal partnered with compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta to defeat Pablo Cuevas and David Marrero 6-2, 6-1 in the first round on Stadium 1. The all-Spanish tandem faced no break points in the 52-minute win. Nadal, who is a three-time BNP Paribas Open singles champion, is the last Top 10 player to capture the doubles title here. He has won 14 of his past 15 doubles matches in the desert, and teamed with countryman Marc Lopez to claim the title in 2010 and ’12.

  1. Rafa embraces challenges in life graciously also because of the closed knitted family. He stays with family until today is not easy for a star like him, just look at the other top players. Love him even more!
