Rafael Nadal: “I am not upset that I lost today”

Rafael Nadal after losing to Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios:

“When you have an opponent who decides to hit the ball really strong and serve like that you are in trouble. I don’t think that I played badly. I hadn’t seen him playing on the other surfaces, grass is only two three tournaments a year but when you serve that big you will always have a chance. I don’t know if he is a guy I will keep meeting the sport is a mental battle at a times, he has all the qualities but things are always a little easier when you are just arriving. When you are there for a while people start to see the negative things about your tennis. We will see if he can stay at the top level but I wish him all the best.”

“When you have nothing to lose you can play the way he did today. When you are playing in the last rounds, it is harder to hit 140 mph second serves. For him the next round for me the beach. My draw was not the best against a lot of players who cannot give you a chance to play very much. I am not upset that I lost today.”

  1. Whoever said that aces is not tennis does not play tennis at all nor know anything about the sport. The serve is one of the most important part of tennis. When you have a good serve, you win 50% of the game. Kyrgios does not have technical capabilities? You must be kidding. He broke Kyrgios in the last set, and breaking Nadal is almost next to impossible.

  2. Rafa’s losing streak has continued…I think he is getting old. Lucky at French Open, but losing AOpen, losing on clay, losing straight sets in Halle, now this. To be honest, every player has nothing to lose playing against him, since he is no 1…so his statement is moot.

  3. So pleased Rafa got through the initial rounds, and as always was a pleasure to watch. Rafa did play well, but Kyrgios had powerful serves and managed to sustain a high level of play for the entire match. Rafa could have won and did have chances to convert, but the splendid play of Kyrgios left very little margin for error. I hate when Rafa loses, but I really think the loss is a MAJOR BLESSING in disguise, and not only as far as some quality time at the beach. The schedule the other players are going to have to endure due to the lack of concern for the players well being by Wimbledon will not be doing any of the players a favour healthwise. I’ll take Rafa prolonging his career, over Rafa remaining #1, or risking injury, because the players are not allowed sufficient time to recover between matches. Kyrgios impressed me a great deal more than Raonic. Moves a lot better. But I only get up at ridiculous times in the early morning hours to watch Rafa!

  4. Kyrgios has played the match of his life which probably he won’t keep it in the next match, Today he left all his energy in the court, also his best service, tomorrow? we’ll see………

  5. Funny enough I’m NOT at all disappointed about the loss today – I believe you have played really really well this year on grass – very well deserved break Rafa onwards we go the US Open – you still our beloved #1 love you and enjoy your rest with your loved ones P.S if this is the future of tennis then I doubt I’ll be watching an Aces only match

    • It’s too bad you lost. Your a great champion and have a great sportsmanship attitude! Get some good rest. See you in Toronto for Rogers Cup then defend your title in NYC

  6. It is not EASY at all being at the top. Every real champion like Nadal is like a goldfish and there can be no hiding place! Like Spiderman, a champion has more enemies by the day, as everybody wants to pull him down and be No 1. Nadal’s ”enemies” continue to increase, from Federer to Djokovic to Murray to Ferrer …….and now Nick Kryios.

But can Nick hold it all together and reign like Nadal? May be. May be not. As King Nadal would always say: ”We’ ll see”

  7. Disfruta de tu descanso y solo pensar en el futuro, la vida siempre te otorga la revancha

  8. Rafa is a champion and always will be because he is modest, honest, A sportsman through and through and an excellent role model for how to behave both on and off the Court. We will see your return. You are still adored and we wish you well.
Go and enjoy the beach with family and friends, we your fans know this is not the end.
You win some you lose some. Now go have fun and we will see you and be cheering you on somewhere on the circuit. God Bless you young man.

  9. With the way Kyrgios served today, NOBODY could have beat him! 37 aces at super speed!? The other top three would have lost also. This kid may be one of the greats someday but he will never have the grace, humility and attitude of our beloved champion! We all love you Rafa <3 Win or lose, you do the sport of tennis proud! Vamos!

  10. But I am upset. I had a chance to watch your match today and boom. You lost. I wish this guy beat the others too and make history. Lol

But You still and always will be our champ. Have a nice time at beach.

  11. So sorry Rafa, you did play well. That guy was just winning on his serves, aces all the time – SOOO boring! It takes more than that to be a great player like you are. He won’t last long in the tournament I am sure. Your draw was the worst and of course Murrays was the best as usual! He has had such an easy run and they are raving as if he has played the top guys! You keep going Rafa, enjoy your break and good luck for the U.S.Open. We will be rooting for you.

  12. You spoke well of your opponent, thats a large part of why we love you. he did well to beat you. You are still the greatest . Enjoy a well deserved rest.
    well of you opponent

  13. U still remain my champ despite ur loss rafa, enjoy ur rest n av fun wit ur family n friends.Vamos

  14. I am very sad. But not because you lost, champ. I am sad because your opponent does not play tennis. It was all about serving aces. 🙁 For me, this is not tennis. It’s sad, it’s not fair. Rafa for me will always be a great champion, always. I will always support you. I love your tennis. I hope that now it is time for rest, Rafa. See you soon, champ!

  15. Like we always say our number one win or lose. You lost today but have won things only certain players can dream of. You won Roland garros which know means everything so hope you enjoy some you time. I be hoping Andy will get it now as he a true gentleman to. Always be my number one much love to you x
