- Nadal, Federer Remain On Collision Course: Wimbledon Round Of 16 Preview (via ATP World Tour)
At World No. 144 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Kyrgios is looking to become just the second player ranked outside the Top 100 to upset a World No. 1 at a Grand Slam. Andrei Olhovskiy, ranked 193rd, previously stunned Jim Courier as a qualifier at Wimbledon in 1992. … “Young players are very dangerous as they always have something special,” Nadal said of Kyrgios. “They are able to play with no pressure. They are fresh. He has a great serve. He’s an aggressive player.”
Nick Kyrgios is having quite the Wimbledon debut. The 19-year-old Australian wildcard was down two sets to love, and came back to stun No. 13 seed Richard Gasquet 3-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5, 10-8 and advance to the third round in his first main draw appearance at the All England Club. Ranked No. 144, Kyrgios earned his wildcard after winning the grass-court ATP Challenger in Nottingham as a qualifier, and he knocked out Stephane Robert in the first round. The win was Kyrgios’ first over a top 20 player, and he’ll play play 20-year-old Jiri Vesely next — which means he has a good chance to make the fourth round.
- Fan Fare: A Look at Rafael Nadal in Survival Mode (via The Changeover)
Rafa likes survival mode; he likes to talk about the joy in the suffering. I get it; it’s the idea that the things you have to work the hardest for are the ones you cherish above all others. Weeks with these kinds of matches are like that for him. I think he prefers them, in a way, to the ones that aren’t much of a challenge. They sharpen him for the greater challenges that lie ahead. Good luck, Nick Kyrgios. I have a feeling you’re going to need it. But…we gonna see, no?

As a result, Wimbledon held back the entire bottom half of the men’s draw to wait for these matches to finish. That means Federer, Nadal and everyone else who’s already through in the bottom half will have an extra day off on Monday as the schedule plays catch-up, but then play back-to-back days on Tuesday and Wednesday. “That’s not a positive thing,” Nadal said. “But it cannot be perfect.”
