The Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and tennis star Rafael Nadal are two athletes that shine not only in their sport, but also on Twitter. A study that focused on the Twitter trends of Spain’s top athletes found that Cristiano Ronaldo has the most followers (19.39 million), with Rafa coming in at the sixth place (4.61 million). Although not part of the study, it was noted that Spain’s #1 tennis player, David Ferrer, had 466,731 followers at the time of publication.
Another finding was that between June 1 and June 30, Rafa gained 265,203 new followers (Ronaldo proportionately gained 711,746 new followers), and yet, both Rafa and Ronaldo are not very active on Twitter. In contrast, Paul Gasol is the most active among Spanish athletes, amassing 378 tweets in the month of June.
The article that published the results, however, concludes by saying that when taken seen on a relative basis (no. of new followers as a percent of total current followers), David Ferrer belongs on top of the list, with a 14.75% increase (60,000) in new followers.
