In what is widely described as one of the greatest tennis matches – if not the greatest tennis match – ever played, Rafael Nadal defeats Roger Federer in a Wimbledon final for the ages. Nadal wins his first men’s singles title at the All-England Club and stops the run of five-straight Wimbledon titles of Federer in a gripping 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7 final in the longest singles final in Wimbledon history at four hours, 48 minutes. Nadal, the four-time French Open champion, becomes the first man to win the French title and Wimbledon in the same year since Bjorn Borg in 1980 and prevents Federer from winning his sixth straight Wimbledon men’s singles title, an unprecedented feat in the modern era of tennis.

Praise for the match comes from all observers of the game, including John McEnroe, the three-time Wimbledon champion and TV commentator who labels the encounter, “The greatest match I’ve ever seen.” Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated describes the match as “a spell-binging men’s final that will stand as the benchmark against which all future tennis matches will be measured.”
