A Golden Racket for Rafael Nadal, Who Never Broke a Racket in His Career

Rafael Nadal, preparing for his final professional tournament at the Davis Cup, played two exhibition matches at the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia, losing both.

In his first match on Thursday, he was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Carlos Alcaraz. Despite the loss, Rafa remained positive: “I have the Davis Cup in front (of me) in a month so every day is an opportunity to be better and better and be ready for this final tournament of my tennis career.”

Rafa acknowledged Carlos’ strength but focused on his progress. “Carlos was too good. I haven’t been on the competitive stage since a couple months ago… But it was a positive match for me, and I’m happy.”

On Saturday, Rafa faced Novak Djokovic in what marked their final meeting as active players, losing 6-2, 7-6(5). Though it was an exhibition, the match carried historical significance as their last encounter before Rafa’s retirement. After the match, our was presented with a golden racquet and reflected on his career: “It has been a dream come true to be able to play for almost 20 years being competitive, having the chance to play in the best places in the world, which I watched on TV as a kid… I cannot thank enough the support and love I have received all around.”

Now, Rafa’s focus is on the Davis Cup, his final competition before retirement. Despite the exhibition losses, he is determined to be ready and make his final contribution to Spanish tennis. “I want to try my best to be ready for that and help the team in some way.”

  1. I and my family have been a Rafa fan from day one, tennis will not be the same without you. So happy we were able to enjoy seeing you play for so many years. Good luck to you and your family on your retirement plans. Hopefully we will see at the Davis tournament.

  2. I watched the Six Kings even though I was not happy about Rafa’s participation. I hope that Rafa can play a small role in assisting the Saudis youth. It was no surprise few women were in attendance. The first set was painful to watch, but the second was better. Novak was not going to embarrass him. Novak’s fans can be awful, but he and Rafa have a respectful relationship. I do wonder if Rafa will even play Davis Cup, but he will be there. Maybe doubles? I have been a Rafan forever, but now it’s time to retire.

    • VaF … You have been a Rafa fan for many many years. I remember reading your post all the time…. Along with Margo, who I haven’t seen for a long time on here. I was wondering why you were disappointed with Rafa playing this event?
