When asked whether he thought he would have won the semi-final had he been able to continue, Zverev confirmed he thought he could.
“For some reason I did. I don’t want to sound arrogant,” he said.
“Rafa is obviously the best player to ever play on that surface so you never know what happens. You never know what happens in that match as well. If I don’t get injured, of course I [could have lost] that match. Of course, he can go on to win his 14th Grand Slam.
“But I felt like I was playing my best tennis that I’ve ever played on that surface. So for some reason, I did feel like I could at least compete with him, which I was doing.
“The outcome of the match obviously, always depends on little factors as well. But I did feel like that could have been the week for me.”
Ljubicic is having none of that, though. The Croatian appears to be struggling to separate Zverev’s words from his declaration that he does not want to be arrogant.
However, he didn’t appear overly annoyed by it when he took to Twitter to comment.
“Nobody wants to sound arrogant but everyone is claiming to have almost won Roland Garros last year,” he said. “Love it!! On with trash talk.”
“I didn’t want to believe it until it was something fixed. I remember Rafael Nadal’s book, when he talks about the 2008 Wimbledon final with Federer when he hits a big shot and for the first time he let himself think about victory,” Jon Rahm said, as quoted by COPE.

It’s a shame Mr Toni would accuse Novak or any vaccinated person for the exposure to the virus. Where is the virus now. There’s little thinking behind Mr Toni’s words.
Even in this group, there are anti-vax people. It pains me to read such a comment as “the unvaccinated are not responsible for the health of the vaccinated,” when it’s a basic health principle that when an infected individual goes out there, whatever his infection is, he is liable to infect other people. It would be more fair if such people never left their homes to prevent their infection – regardless of whether they’re aware of it or not – from affecting other people during a pandemic. But as Novak Djokovic himself demonstrated on several occasions back in 2021, he didn’t take responsibility for it and once even spread it to a crowd of spectators. That’s what you call the ultimate irresponsibility that should never be tolerated. It’s good if who you infect are fellow pro tennis players. They would have the money to have themselves treated, but what about the plain tennis fans? Isn’t that so insensitive and uncaring?
That Zverev match had the making of one for the ages. If Sascha had not been hurt it could have gone to five tie breaks and a seven hour match.
Djokovic could have contributed to global public health but instead he remained true to his reputation for ego and selfishness. You may have a different view.
