PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal wins the Australian Open for his 21st Grand Slam title

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal won his second Australian Open and 21st Grand Slam title with a five-set victory over Daniil Medvedev.

Our champ lost first two sets but recovered to win 2-6, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in five hours and 23 minutes. He is the first man in the Open Era to come back from two sets down in an Australian Open final to win the title.

15,000 fans watched this year’s Australian Open final at the Rod Laver Arena. Most of them were Rafans who were cheering loud and taking photos to mark the occasion of Rafa becoming the first man to win 21 majors.

His victory is even more remarkable considering Rafa flew to Australia with just two matches under his belt in the second half of 2021 because he was sidelined with a chronic foot injury that can be treated but not cured. He also had a bout of COVID-19.

  1. Oh my goodness my hero has won! I don’t know what to say well done and many congratulations. I knew you could do it. I guessed right I thought it would be five sets of hard fought tennis which I shall watch later! Unbelievable RAFA GOAT! I always thought you were anyway! Such a wonderful role model to all youngsters taking up the sport! Let’s hope you keep going we will miss you if you retire! With love from your greatest fan Jo from England!!!

  3. We thought we had been through a lot of suffering with Rafa throughout his career…

Then today Rafa said, “I’ll show you what is suffering…”

What a sweet sweet victory today. And the way Rafa went about it… This will mean so much to our champ Rafa and to us all. I still see the so-called ‘Win Predictor’ at Medvedev 96% – Rafa 4% and look how that turned out.

  4. Congratulations!!!!! You DESERVE it!!! I could only cry with happiness and relief!!!

    😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  7. I wanna apologize to the members of this site and to nadal and his entourage I wrote a peace on another topic where I express my anger and dissapointment after the first two sets.

I didnt expect nadal to win this in five because of his lack of matches and also age. I am complety shell shocked but also mentally exhausted.

I found it very difficult to watch these kind of matches they are not good for your health. Nadal won this match on fighting spirit which I thought he lose it. But to be honest he played a terrible match with no first serve at all and free points. He won the final on the important points he hit more unforced errors then medvedev and less winners then medvedev. So this victory is a absolute miracle.

Nadal needs to start to work on his serve and return because without improvements on those two he can not compete at his age for grandslam titles.

I hope he recovers well I dont expect him to play acapulco I think he is going to withdraw. I also saw that he is planning to play 4 clay court tournaments that is irresponsible at his age he is going to be exchausted at the french open. I hope he will cut in clay court tournaments.

But finally his 21 grandslam and he equalled roy emerson and novak djokovic in winning al 4 grandslams more then one.

    Congratulations champ
