Denis on playing Rafa:
It’s always an honour to go up against a guy like Rafa. It’s always going to be a battle against him. It’s going to be a tough one but I’m going to enjoy it.
Rafa on playing Denis:
Shapovalov is a player with amazing potential. Everybody knows that when he’s playing well, it’s very difficult to stop him with [his] big serve, amazing forehand, and he’s very quick.
Rafa has won his last 21 Tour-level matches against fellow lefthanders. He has not lost a match to a lefthanded player since falling to Denis Shapovalov in the 3rd round at 2017 Montreal-1000 – although he did give a walkover to Shapovalov in the semifinals at 2019 Paris-1000. He has a 109-14 win-loss record against lefthanders at Tour-level.
Rafa has also won 33 of the 36 matches he has contested against lefthanded players at the Grand Slams. His only defeats came against Gilles Muller in both the 2nd round at 2006 Wimbledon and the round of 16 at 2017 Wimbledon and against Fernando Verdasco in the 1st round here in 2016.
He is bidding to win his 24th Tour-level hard court title and claim 7th place on the Open Era list for most Tour-level hard court titles won, ahead of Jimmy Connors. He equalled Connors after winning his 23rd hard court title at Melbourne earlier this month.
GOOD LUCK & VAMOS RAFA!
