PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal claims 89th career title in Melbourne

World No. 6 Rafael Nadal beat Maxime Cressy 7-6(6), 6-3 in the Melbourne Summer Set final on Sunday to clinch his 89th career title and gain a big confidence boost ahead of next week’s Australian Open. The American had a set point in the tiebreak but couldn’t convert and once our champ claimed the first set, the final result was almost inevitable.

The 20-time grand slam champion did not drop a set at this year’s tournament on his way to a first title of 2022. He has now won a title for 19 consecutive years.

I want to thank all the organisation here. I feel privileged and a very lucky guy to be here again. I am coming back from some challenging moments in terms of injuries, so I can’t be happier. It means a lot to be back and with a trophy in my hands.

This court has always been very, very special for me. The Rod Laver Arena is very, very special for everyone and it is more special because of you guys. You guys are a great crowd and I can’t thank you enough.

Rafa Nadal

Only Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94) have won more ATP Tour titles than Rafa’s 89 in the Open Era.

  1. It was a great day for Rafa and all his fans It was nerve racking but worth every minute you will never know just how we love watching you there just isn’t anybody to compare with watching RAFA

  2. While Rafa was winning his 89th title, the Serbian was holed up in a roach infested immigration hotel. His request to have his personal chef prepare his meals was denied. He needn’t worry because scientists have found that bugs contain lots of protein.

The appeal, to be heard remotely, is scheduled for 10:30am local time. A link for it is in the Bleacher Report’s article “Where and When to Watch Novak Djokovic Court Deportation Case Live.”

Hi to Mimi, Lorna and Our dear Margo

  4. Rafa needed time to figure out how to play against Maxine, and he did. He did make us sweat the TB however. Rafa is still rusty, but it is so good to have him back. I just want him to play well.

  7. Congrats, Rafa! Really enjoyed the match. Saw your wheels turning every second. Maxime was really impressive in his first final. I knew you would break back in the 2nd set. Happy 89th Title, what a confidence builder!

  8. Vamos Rafa!! Hope to see you lifting the trophy on the same court on 30th! After 4 heart-breaking finals defeats and injuries at the AO, this is the trophy I wish to see him lifting the most this year. Let’s go!!

  9. #89 🏆 Congrats Rafa!👏 All the best at the Open.🎾❤️

Congratulations to Team Canada 🇨🇦!👏 Denis and Felix were amazing today, played unbelievably well. Hope Team Spain 🇪🇸 win it next year.

    • Mimi, It’s been a great start all around for 2022.🔥 Thanks for supporting Team Canada. I’m going to ask P.M.Trudeau to make you an honorary Canadian! 😉 They got revenge for their Davis Cup loss to Spain a few years ago. It would be exciting to see a best of 3 rubber match next year.🤞

Encouraging performances from our faves especially Rafa. As long as his foot holds up he should be in contention for the important titles he wants and be able to enjoy doing what he loves most. 💝

      • Hi Pauline, you’re welcome, my pleasure. I am a big fan of FAA. So nice of you, thank you so much!🙏☺️ Yes, and best wishes to Rafa always!❤️

    • Dear Jill,

Now, don’t let us get ahead of ourselves, eh!
Asking Rafa to win AO2022 just because he won an ATP 250 event will be like asking Lionel Messi to win the World Cup for Argentina just because Messi won his 7th Ballon D’or.
      Crazy isn’t it?

  10. Congrats to our beast in black. It was a nerve wracking match, but our champion figured out how to win. So worth the wake up call at 2a. Happy. Happy. Happy.
