David Goffin beats Rafael Nadal, but Spain reaches ATP Cup semifinals

Rafael Nadal and Pablo Carreno Busta have sent Spain to the ATP Cup semi-finals after taking out the deciding doubles matchup with Belgium.

Earlier in the night, Roberto Bautista Agut got Spain on the board with a 6-1 6-4 opening singles win over Kimmer Coppejans.

Spain were in the box set until world No.11 David Goffin scored the biggest upset of the ATP Cup with his 6-4 7-6 (7-3) defeat of Rafa. Goffin’s big win forced our champ to enter the deciding doubles matchup with scores locked at 1-1.

But Rafa and Carreno Busta pulled off a stunning comeback in the doubles, defeating Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-7 7-5 10-7.

Spain will now face Australia in Saturday night’s semi-final in Sydney.

“Coming from Perth we didn’t have a lot of time to adapt and today the conditions were very heavy with humidity. Playing against David in the singles was a very difficult thing. But we are super happy to be in the semi-finals,” Rafa said. “We’re excited to play a very tough one against Australia. We will give our best like we have done all through our careers.”

  1. Rafa, it seems that the conditions in Sydney don’t seem to suit you. Really hope you can overcome these conditions – make changes in your game hitting flatter and serving well and being much more aggressive. Kyrgios and De Minaur are both extremely good and aggressive. Hope you and Bautista Agut get the better of them.

Wish you all the luck and form for your matches. Stay healthy and fit.

    ❤️❤️😘😘🍀🍀🍀

  2. Good match. Sadly not surprised that Rafa lost after the way he played in the previous match. Can’t say that he is in top form. Hope he rests well and also that he finds form so that he can continue well in all the up coming matches. I just want him to win as much as he can before he finally hangs up his racket.

    VAMOS

  3. Rafa gave all what he had but Goffin was the better player today. Rafa was too passive.

The Double-Match with Carreno Busta was a big thriller. Great performance!

Take rest and keep working Rafa. Vamos ❤️❤️

  4. Desde Canarias, admirando la dureza de los contrincantes pero Rafa eres enormemente superior, quedo a la grata orden, un deportivo y fuerte abrazo y a tu esposa besitos piadosos de: Semper Fidelis, C. Javier

  5. Well done, Rafa and Pablo for clinching that nail-biter of a doubles match sending the Spanish Team to the semis.

When Spain was denied the first video challenge, which I firmly believe was a part of the opponent’s racquet extended over the net, I told my son who was watching the match with me that poetic justice will prevail.

Rafa accepted the verdict without much ado.

    And Team Spain won!

  6. Enhorabuena por esos pasos a semifinales, partidos y contrincantes duros pero al final os llevasteis la victoria,
Próximo rival tambien duro Nick Kirigios, suerte para esas semifinales. SIEMPRE CONTIGO!!!
