VIDEO: Rafael Nadal talks about chatty Parisian crowd at Roland Garros

Serving at 40-30 in the eighth game of the third set, Rafael Nadal was given a time violation warning, which he felt was the correct call made in the wrong circumstances because of persistent talking from the crowd as he prepared to serve in that game, and during his previous service game.

Here’s what our champ had to say about the time violation and talkative crowd after his win against Juan Ignacio Londero.

  1. What matters is that Rafael won the match. As a professional he has had to contend with nasty opponents and rude spectators, as well as questionable calls by lines people and umpires. We have
certainly seen moronic behaviour at many sporting events. Who does not know that silence is required when a player is serving? 🤐 Buying a ticket does not give you license to harass players
    during a tennis match.

  2. Tennis is supposed to be a gentlemen’s sport. Complete silence when the players start a point is a must. I didn’t See that part of the match but for what I read, Rafa was absolutely right. Fans pay to watch a match, not to disrupt the players.

  4. Chatty?? Rafa was being polite when he said they were “talking”…
Anyway, Rafa is through to the quarters of RG and it’s his birthday tomorrow! Many things to be happy about!

  5. Disappointed that Rafa of all people should want to control the crowd. They paid a great deal for a seat. That is what keeps the sport going.

      • I notice you do not leave a name. It do As to rules of audience etiquette I learned them well by playing tennis at school,Richmond Grammar School for Girls,Surrey England, by attending Wimbledon on a regular basis and having the privilege of watching former gentlemen of tennis….try Rod Laver, Neil Fraser, Roy Emerson ,the latter earned his laurels ,28, Grand Slams, as an amateur! They were just happy to have an audience. Please respond.

    • Rafa could serve during the noise but it places the receiver at a disadvatage. Tennis players, so I’ve been told, gather info from the sound of the ball coming off the racquet before they pick it up visually.

    • What??? Really??? There is nothing more disrespectful to the players on court than a crowd that is loud and talkative during play… It is up to the umpire to calm the crowd down with a . “S’il vous plaît” but she was too busy looking at the shot clock to do her job….

Rafa had every right to wait even if it cost him a time violation.

    • Jean Palmer What a shocking comment as in principle paying for a seat is for watching a competition. Crowds support the player they prefer but not by disrupting the other player. Obviously some ticket buyers are Rafa haters repeatedly yelling when Rafa was serving. The umpire should have intervened as I cannot imagine this behaviour being allowed durind a Federer match. i do wonder if one of what the French call “casseur” is named Jean Palmer?

      • Jean Palmer – crowds were more respectful in those days, did you not notice that? Laver, Emerson and co. did not have to deal with the unruly crowds you can sometimes get nowadays. And the umpire certainly did not do her job, by asking for silence. Rafa was quite right to draw her attention to the noise, of which she seemed to be quite oblivious.

If you must blame someone, blame her, not Rafa.

    • Where did he say he wanted to control the crowd? He said that he wanted to wait until they were a little quieter, that’s all. Only ignorant people think it’s okay for the crowd to call out when a player is trying to serve!

      • AGREE……..IN MY THINKING, ALL UNNECESSARY BS! BUT THE GOOD NEWS RAFA IS MARCHING ON WITH POWER AND STEADFAST BRILLIANT TENNIS CAREER. MUST SAY IT APPEARS OFTEN WE NOTICED NOVAK AND PRINCES R FANS ARE ACTING OUT YET ATP OFFICIAL SAY NOTHING.

WE ALSO NOTICED IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS PRE RECORDED APPLAUSE WHICH IS FREQUENTLY BEING PLAYED OUT ON COURT WHEN PRINCESS R IS PLAYING, OR WHEN NOVKA PLAYED NEXT COURT TO RAFA’S, DURING POST MATCH ON COURT INTERVIEW. IT WAS TACTLESS OF THE PERSON INTERVIEWING RAFA TO PAUSE AND COMMENT ON THE ARTIFICIAL APPLAUSE SUPPOSEDLY AIMED TO MATCH NEXT DOOR. ……RAFA THANKFULLY DID NOT RESPOND IN ANY PARTICULAR INTEREST.

FURTHERMORE, WHAT REALLY IS NAUSEATING IS WHEN YOU GO TO VIEW RAFA’S VIDEO CLIPS, PRINCESS R CLIPS SHOW UP…….I THINK THAT LESS FOLKS ARE INTERESTED IN FOLLOWING OR SEEING PRINCES R. AND YET SOMEHOW THE ARTIFICIAL PROMOTION IS ABSOLUTELY BEYOND OBVIOUS. THE PROMOTION OF UNDESERVING PLAYER WHO NO LONGER COMPETES AGAINST CURRENTLY MOST FIT TOP PLAYERS IN STRONG TOP MATCHES IS RATHER RIDICULOUS. NOT ONLY ABSURD BUT MAKES A MOCKERY OF THE TENNIS SPORT AND IS RATHER OBVIOUS SINCE TENNIS FANS ARE ABLE TO FOLLOW CLOSELY ALL TOURS…..ALL DRAWS…….ALL PLAYERS’ PERFORMANCES……… THE DISHONEST PORTRAYAL OF A WEAKER PLAYER WHO IS NOT A TOP PLAYER YET IS BEING PROMOTED AND GROUPED WITH TOP PLAYERS IS RIGHT OUT DESPICABLE AND AN UNFORTUNATE DISGRACE OF POOR MARKETING. FORTUNATELY, TOP PLAYERS WHO EARN THEIR SPOT LIGHT FAIR AND SQUARE KNOW EXACTLY THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND SO NO ONE BUT THE WEAKER PLAYER ACTUALLY GETS FOOLED. THERE IS SO MUCH UNNECESSARY BS POLITICS AND IT CERTAINLY TAKES AWAY FROM THE SPORT OF TENNIS. THANKFULLY RAFA NADAL IS WORTH WATCHING AND WHEN HE RETIRES IN FEW YEARS MILLIONS OF TENNIS FANS WILL LOSE INTEREST AND TICKET SELLING WILL DROP DRASTICALLY. STADIUMS WILL NOT GET PACKED, AND ALL THE POLITICS BS WILL BECOME MORE AND MORE EVIDENT. THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS BASED ON LAST FEW YEARS OF WATCHING TENNIS, FOLLOWING ATP WEB SITE UPDATES, FOLLOWING SOCIAL MEDIA AND YOU TUBE CLIPS. THERE ARE MANY BEAUTIFUL TOP PLAYERS OUT THERE WHO DESRVE MUCH MORE COVERAGE ON ATP WEB SITE.
