ATP Rankings: Rafa returns to No. 1

Rafael Nadal reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the men’s Association of Tennis Professionals world singles rankings released on Monday with 8,770 points, after winning his eighth Italian Open title. It’s a familiar spot for our champ, who’s beginning his 174th week at the top spot.

Defeating third-placed Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the final on Sunday, the 16-time Grand Slam champion overtook Roger Federer, who has decided to skip the clay season for the second year in a row.

Marin Cilic climbed to the fourth position, ahead of Grigor Dimitrov and Juan Martin del Potro.

The current ATP rankings and point scores are as follows:

1. Rafael Nadal (Spain) 8,770 points

2. Roger Federer (Switzerland) 8,670

3. Alexander Zverev (Germany) 5,615

4. Marin Cilic (Croatia) 4,950

5. Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria) 4,870

8. Dominic Thiem (Austria) 3,195

  1. Yes Rafa at 5 years of age difference with pundit favourite goat RF, you have to win 4 more slams to be proclaimed the goat. You certainly can do it if you stay healthy and happy with your tennis.

    Please stay heathy and happy.

Wamos Rafa, the King of tennis, you are the best.

  2. In Rafa’s Rome post-match presser he explained his second-set loss. He said it started to get cloudy, the balls were much slower and lower and his top spin was not working. Also, the conditions were entirely different from all of this year’s previous matches at Rome. During the rain break he had a chance to figure it out.

His facial expressions were probably due to frustration and confusion rather than fear or resignation is my guess because he could feel the difference, it was a new feeling he said, from all the previous matches.

For someone who has been playing since such a young age it’s no surprise that he can detect such changes immediately. Thankfully he had time to adjust his play to compete with the forces of Mother Nature and Zverev.

As far as Rafa is concerned, Roland-Garros is completely different; the conditions, the court, the balls. And Rafa knows Roland-Garros.

    Up next, his third undécima.

  3. Man, he made that Nerve racking. When Zverev was up a break early in the third I though that was it for Rafa. Rafa showed why he is the king of clay and the most mentally strong tennis player in the world. VAMOS!

I’m not worried about the #1 Ranking, Rafa can win slams as the 5th seed like he did in the 2013 French. Right now Rafa has no chance to pass Rogers record at #1, so all I care about is slams. Rafa can catch Roger but he has to win more slams and stop Roger along the way. Right now Roger is focusing on winning slams. He knows that is the key to being the goat. That’s why he forfeited the French he knows he has no chance there and it would be a waste of his remaining powers to not give it his all at Wimbledon where he has his best chances to win slams. Rafa has to stop Roger at Wimbledon because no one else is capable right now that Murray and Chokovic are not themselves. Here’s to another 2008 for Rafa back to back French and Wimbledon! Vamos!!!

  7. CONGRATULATIONS to a great champion who never takes the easy way out.

Rafa didn’t have only one win in Rome, he had a triple win in Rome; the Rome Masters’ trophy, a move up in the Race to London, and back to world No. 1.

May his astounding record keep on growing.

    RAFA ROCKS

  8. I was worried that Rome would take a lot out of Rafa and the up and down sets in the final, l think were due to tiredness from the Djokovic match. I didn’t see Rafa’s ‘game face’ on even in the first set – he just battled through as though he was in the 5th set of a grand slam. Thankfully Sasha was also drained from a 14 match win streak on clay. Still only 100 points between him and Roger. Yet again, Rafa must win RG to stay at No.1. After that the pressure is back on Roger to win Wimbledon.

  9. Congrats Rafa! You deserve to be No. 1, more success and looking forward to RG
and getting the 11th 🏆… meanwhile just rest and relax until the tournament. Stay strong and focus , you can win this and we support you all the way.VAMOS and best of luck in RG. 💪💪💪💥💥💥

  10. Donde estès del ranking siempre n.1…,erres el mejor….siempre contigo…ADELANTE….

  11. Congratulations Rafa on your victory at Rome and getting back to #1 ranking.
Wishing the very best to Rafa for the upcoming Rolad Garros.

    • In fact that is the best definition Rafa is the King of tennis.Let all others who have obsession with ‘goat’ keep their goat. Rafa is not goat, Rafa is the King. In fact Fognini’s father said it all: “Rafa is not a champion,he is the champion”.

Wamos Rafa you are the best.

      • Let’s get Roger to say it and the debate will be over. 4 more slams to go!!! VAMOS!!!
