The Monte Carlo Rolex Masters draw is out, and thus begins the European clay season. Top seed and 10-time champion Rafael Nadal has a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the match between Aljaz Bedene or a qualifier.
He could face Adrian Mannarino in the third round, prior to a quarter-final against Dominic Thiem or Novak Djokovic.

Rafa has won Monte Carlo Masters ten times including an Open-Era record of eight consecutive titles between 2005-2012. Last year he became the first man in the Open Era to win a single tournament 10 times.

In Rafa’s first Monte-Carlo match, he will be challenged by 28-year-old Aljaz Bedene. This is their second meeting:
In their first meeting, Bedene lost to Rafa in their 2016 Monte-Carlo match 6-3, 6-3 in the R32.
In 2018 Bedene
lost to Fognini in QF at Rio
lost to Thiem in the F at Buenos Aires
In 2017 he lost at the FO in R2 to Vesely: 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The only thing they have in common is zero titles in 2018 but Rafa is on his way to change that statistic.
This should be an easy win for Rafa.

Carol, I agree that it is tough. Some of the others like Dimitrov’s look easier, but you never know. I try to only look at the first and second rounds. I was pleased that Uncle Toni said Rafa looked better in Valencia than he thought he would. . I will root for Rafa as always, but will try to be realistic too. Last year’s clay season was almost perfect.

2005 is the only year Rafa had a perfect clay-court season, at the age of 19, when he won MC, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, and the FO. A repeat of 2005 would be wonderful but…..
His 2017 clay season was not perfect compared to 2005 but I think it was absolutely FABULOUS.
In each year of 2006, ’07, ’12, and ’13, he won 2 masters, Barcelona, and the FO. In 2017, ELEVEN tennis player years after 2006, he did the same.
In 2008 and ’11, he won MC, Barcelona and the FO.
In 2009, he won 2 Masters, and Barcelona but lost the FO.
In 2010, he won the 3 Masters plus the FO. This is his best record since 2005.
In 2011 he won MC, Barcelona and the FO.
During three years, 2014-2016, he won a total of 2 Masters, 1 Barcelona, and 1 FO. A slump it was.
In 2017 alone, he won 2 Masters, Barcelona, and the FO. This equals his best clay-court season since his comeback year of 2013, 5 years later.
He’s older now, and had to be tired after 2 Masters and Barcelona in 2017. I wished he had skipped Rome but thank goodness he went on to win the FO.
Clearly Madrid and Rome are where he has suffered his most clay-court loses. I am not sure, but this year he may skip Rome. If he does, it may give him an edge as the season winds down.
Hoping he does a phenomenal job again. I welcome any feedback you may wish to offer. And don’t hesitate to point out any errors I may have made.

Even before he won his first French Open, he was being hailed as the best clay-court player ever.

Last year, as we all know, Rafa won his 10th Monte Carlo Masters, his 10th Barcelona Open, and his 10th Coupe de Mousquetaires, plus his 5th Madrid Open. It is a lot but, if he is at his best, he can do it again. Here’s to wishing him a repeat clay season in 2018.
