Davis Cup: Rafael Nadal’s first practice in Valencia

Rafael Nadal arrived yesterday evening in Valencia to join Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta, Feliciano Lopez and David Ferrer for Spain’s 17th meeting with Germany in Davis Cup this week. Here are a few photos from his today’s practice session.

  4. By all accounts, it is still unknown if Rafa will play in the Davis Cup. However, Rafa seems to be signaling that he will play.

“‘Here I am, I am going to try the best I can,” Rafa is quoted as saying on his arrival to Valencia on Sunday. Already on Monday, both Rafa and David Ferrer were the first to arrive at the Valencia Sporting Club for practice.

The duel between Spain and Germany will be their seventeenth with Germany as the favorite [10-6]. Friday will be singles, Saturday will be doubles, and Sunday will be singles’ finals.”

    Buena salud a ti Rafa.

    RAFA ROCKS

    • Margo, I have a feeling that Rafa might play doubles if he is not 100%. Who do you think would play doubles? My guess is Lopez and ? Sascha certainly has been talking about meeting Rafa in Davis Cup.

      • In Rafa’s presser today, he hinted that he might play on Sunday instead of Friday.

      • Va4fsvre, if Rafa is not well enough to play singles, I don’t see how he can play doubles. His body will still have to perform, maybe not as much as it would have to playing singles, but movement would be the same. My unprofessional opinion🤔

Re Lopez’s doubles’ partner: I don’t know if the rules allow for a player [Rafa] to withdraw from a team and have him replaced by a new member. Doesn’t each team have to total 5 members? I don’t know.

I have read comments made by Sascha and he is being as upbeat as he can under the circumstances; clay, Rafa, Spanish soil, Spanish fans. Also, please keep in mind that the German team, it’s captain, and Germany, all are putting their hopes in Sascha for a win.
        That is a heavy load.

Sascha said they now have an excellent doubles team. He also said “You can’t go by history [10-6]. Tennis has changed and it’s going to be hard against Rafa.”

This will be Spain and Germany’s 17th meeting and Germany leads 10-6. I hope Rafa can make it 7.

        RAFA ROCKS

      • Va4fsvre, I just came across an article about Bruguera’s El Transistor’s radio interview today [April 3]. He revealed that Feliciano Lopez has a fever, no details given. What happens if Feli can’t play?

He was asked about who will play what at Davis Cup; his response was he has ideas but was waiting for the last minute to decide.

        YES, RAFA ROCKS

    • Margo, I have seen articles on Rafa’s presser in a couple of tennis sites. He talks about how much he is enjoying being on the Davis Cup team. He likes the court in the bullring. Then he said that he may not be ready to play on Friday, but instead on Sunday against Zverev. Moya was quoted in another story that Rafa was not yet 100%. He also talked about the AO, Acapulco, being injured, etc. The good news is that he seems in very good spirits now. I can’t wait to see him back on clay!

      • Va4favre, I may be wrong but I thought it was the captain’s responsibility to announce each team-member’s role in Davis Cup and when he would play. Bruguera has yet to do so.

I don’t go to other tennis sites for Rafa news, I go to news outlets so maybe that’s why I missed it. When I post comments I supply my sources so others can read the original articles if they wish. I don’t doubt that you read Rafa said “he will play on Sunday against Zverev.” Hopefully the suspense will end on or before Thursday.

        Your input is appreciated.
