PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal beats Karen Khachanov in 3rd round of 2017 Wimbledon

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon on Friday by beating Karen Khachanov 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(3) in two hours and 14 minutes on Centre Court.

Rafa now won 28 consecutive completed sets in Grand Slam play, having won the title in Paris without dropping a set for the third time in his career and won all three of his matches in London in straight sets.

He has matched his own personal record of 28 – a run that stretched from the quarterfinals at 2010 Wimbledon through to the final at the 2010 US Open.

After the match, Rafa said:

I played fantastic for a set and a half but it got tougher after that. He started to hit stronger so I was happy to get through in three sets.

I think I played some good shots from the forehand and backhand. I’m happy about almost everything.

Rafa fired 7 aces to Karen’s 13.  He hit 41 winners compared to Karen’s 33, and made 19 unforced errors to his opponent’s 35. Our champ won a total of 112 points to the Russian’s 85.

Rafa capitalised on 4 of his 15 chances for break, while Karen converted 1 of his 5 break points.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion will next face Gilles Muller on Monday in the fourth round.

  1. I’m SO VERY HAPPY that Rafa is playing so well. I wish to especially thank a contemporary of mine, Beverly Budnichenko, for having written such a disarming comment!!!! (She’s 83, while I’m 89 years of age.)There is not much more to say about our champion….HOWEVER, I, and his millions of other fans, would LOVE to see him win a THIRD WIMBLEDON!!!! VAMOS, RAFA!!!!!!

    1. Hello. Arline. I’m sure that being a Rafa fan in our 80’s keeps us young. My family teases me about my ” Rafa obsession” as they call it but I tell them it is better on their ears to hear me rave about Rafa than complain about being old.
Here’s hoping for a Wimbledon win. We can both dance with joy. !!

Let me start by saying i am happy the champ is in the fourth round. I found him not playing well in the third set. He relaxed too much and let kachanov dictate the third set.

In the fourth round he will play gilles muller. Anybody that thinks this is easy is sadly mistaken and is underestimating gilles muller. I watch him playing and he is playing the best tennis of his life. He outaced rosol 45 aces and hit 19 aces against bedene. He is playing with high level of confidence has beaten nadal in 2005 on grass and believes he can do it again. Nadal doesnt like big servers and doesnt like people who dont give him rythm.

I hope the champ doesnt underestimate him for one minute. Serves and returnes well and is very sharp from the first point till the last point

  3. Rafa played brilliantly in the 1st set but it wasn’t the 6-1 scoreline which impressed me the most .
For me Rafa’s finest moment came when he was down 5-6 on his serve and Karen had set point Rafa calmly and cooly saved the point, levelled at 6 all , then won the tie breaker with little drama.
I thought back to the year 2015 when Rafa was going through a confidence crises and he was playing Fognini. Although he was 2 sets and a break up in the 3rd, it was Fogniini who won the match.
The Rafa of 2015 would never have won against Karen in that 3rd set and probably have lost the match. Karen is a very talented young man.
It is great to see the Rafa of some years back rise to his former glory, especially since he not only had to face his own demons but those who criticised, berated and insulted him ( remember J Beer?? And some others ??)
We do not know what the future holds for Rafa. He is not a machine . He can’t go on for ever, But for now we are once more witnessing the brilliance of his play.
We so much want you to win Wimbledon no. 3, Rafa. For your own sake. You deserve it for all your hard work and perseverence in times of adversity and of success and for all the pleasure you have given us over many years.as we have followed your wonderful career. (

( Please excuse this lengthy contribution. Put it down to the ramblings of an 83 year old mind from one who is a Rafa fan for ever .)

I agree with that, Rafantastic. But BeverIey also shares a trait with our champ Rafa; humility. Beverley will never admit how good a writer she is. That’s ok with me; we can do it for her.

Jus want to see Rafa change his gears every match, getting better and better as the tournament progresses..I jus want to see the beast mode completely unleashed version of Rafa in the final against anybody whomsoever on the other side of net..he shud play like nothing to lose with aggressive tennis and bite the trophy on July 16..I my opinion the serve and return of serve are going to be the keys..I think he is playing well inside the baseline and shud not lose the court position no matter whatever the opponent throws …the next two upcoming matches will certainly lift Rafa’s game and he will be ready and prevail..my last wish for this tournament is to see Rafa thrash FedEx in the final..and put an end to Federer drooling..

  6. Wow, what a match. I felt Rafa’s intensity and urgency throughout the entire match. Karen is definitely a potential top 5 player. Thankfully Rafa shut him down the the 3rd set tie-break. BTW, where does Rafa find those angles to hit from.
His wrists have to be made of steel to execute those insane shots. I really enjoyed this match but happy for the straight set conclusion. Karen is definitely a contender. So glad Rafa has the weekend to practice and then hopefully rest and relax some!

You obviously are a person who was raised properly. Your apology to fans for your remark shows that. Just try not to goad the one or two here who will expound on negative crap. You may have noticed the novel that was written in response to your ill fated comment.

Your passion for Rafa shines through your comments. I too hope this will be a B2B FO/Wimby year. Why not make it a triple? F/O, Wimby AND US Open…sounds fascinating to me. Rafa is looking so much more than the champion he has been, a constant reminder of why I became a fan.

The third set was heart-breaker. Fortunately Rafa came through with 3 sets for who knows what could have happened with that height and ace-machine rival.

Fortunately again, Rafa was great in terms of aces too.

    Best wishes against Muller.

Great two sets. In the third it was really close, but Rafa made it in straight sets. Take rest and enjoy the two days off. All the best for the next round. Vamos Rafa ❤

  13. Thank God it ended in straight sets. Playing a tiebreaker against a bug server always gives a itchy feeling. But our champ is rolling babyyy. Guller can be tough but Rafa in current form should tackle him.
