What do you think of Rafael Nadal’s US Open draw?

The US Open draw is a done deal. Rafael Nadal’s first opponent will be Denis Istomin (ranked 107th in the world) of Uzbekistan.

Seeded fourth in New York, our champ is placed in the same half as world number one Novak Djokovic and could meet the Serb in the semi-finals.

It’s a cakewalk until the qf. I expect rafa to struggle nonetheless during these first 4 rounds. If he makes it to qf then he will be praised here as if he did something miraculous, while shooting tomato cans is not (as very well pointed out by jeremy ekstein when analyzing rafa’s disappointing olympic performance in singles). He will not beat djoko for sure though. He does not believe he can and neither does his team.

It’s going to be an interesting one – we don’t know where Novak is in terms of form (although he seems confident (as always) and we don’t know where Rafa’s at. I can’t help wondering whether Rafa would have continued to recover form if it wasn’t for the latest wrist injury. In which case, he may have been close to his best. Hopefully Rafa can pull something out of the bag but my expectations are low. Either way Rafa has 100% support from me which leaves 0% for anyone else💪👏👊

  4. I think it’s a reasonable draw when you compare it to David Ferrer’s! Anything can happen and we know Rafa will give everything he’s got. Everyone wants to beat him though so will throw all they have at him. He seems in a great place mentally and the Olympics win has given him massive amount of satisfaction and happiness as well as confirming his fitness. Hope he can get a third title in New York. Vamos Rafa!!!!!

Rafa you have prove beyond doubt that you are the champion. You only to forget the negatives and focus on every game and do your best as you always do. It is very possible to win again the US OPEN, so we support you and we love you all the time. You are a great fighter who plays with passion for the game. Wish you good luck the rest of the season.

Nole would still be the main problem for Rafa… Sighhh
Also Milos Raonic is a huge server that could punish anyone.
    Tough draw!

Only good news is Francisco Roig is coaching Rafa (not Toni)!

Def a decent draw for Rafa, who usually doesn’t have one. Yes it’s up to Rafa, but bad luck with draws has existed.
Yesterday I had the privilege to watch Rafa live for the first time on the practice courts of the Open. Coincidentally on the next court over was Raonic, practicing with John Mac. I literally had to control myself from yelling out “Don’t help him too much, wait a few years for Rafa’s sake!!” Then I watched the draw. But over on new Grandstand was old Nicky boy. Served so fast you literally couldn’t see the ball. Rafa’s seeing the ball well returning.
So Vamos, our beautiful champ. Millions are with you.

Debby, I am so envious that you got to see Rafa practice! I too think that it is a decent draw. I was almost positive that he would get Delpo. As we all know, upsets can come when we least expect them. I just want him to play well and without injuries. The rest will come. Novak has a tougher draw and Andy the easiest, in my view.

      1. Think you got it right Va4 …Andy has the best draw, Milos has the power to knock Rafa out with his massive serve and now with Johnny Mac to help him with the rest of his game. I don’t care for Milos wham bam style of play but unfortunately I think that’s the future of tennis. I will have no interest in tennis when all the oldies are gone! Who is going to watch when it all comes down to who can serve the most nonreturnable serve and that’s all!

  8. A reasonable draw for Rafa. We all know he is prone to nerves, especially in the early rounds, but as long as he is injury free, plays smart, tactical matches and serves well he is in with a very good chance. RESPECT ALL, FEAR NO ONE!

Keep the same joy and positive feelings you had in Rio Rafa and, who knows, you may well take home some silverware!!! 😚❤️👍

Looking good but Milos Raonic could prove to be a problem if Rafa comes up against him. Milos is playing great and I don’t think it will be long before he starts to give Novak a run for his money. Still one day at a time , just looking forward to some great tennis from Rafa and hope he plays like he did at the Olympics.

I don’t worry about the draw or put much emphasis on it, he has to play who he gets. He just has to be ready for anything, which he believes already. Good Luck RAFA, you’re great.

    RAFA fan forever.
